Any Apple iPod Touch out there? If so, have any of you tried installing the iPhone or any third party apps on it? I heard you can, but is it safe and easy to do? I'm considering getting one, but I don't want one if I'm risking bricking the thing by trying to do waht it takes to install them...

Several kids on my basketball team got one for Christmas. How would the iPhone work on it? Is it a VoiP thing? I thought the iTouch was just a media player with internet abilities.

They are AWESOME!! I could see why a high school or college kid would want one, but I'm not sure how much an adult would use it (outside of those NY commuters).

It is possible to install third-party apps on both the iPod touch and on the iPhone. One of the latest and greatest apps for the iPod touch is a VoIP app. However, installing third-party apps on either device currently requires unsupported hacking of the OS. Apple has announced and is releasing a developer SDK for both devices, so supported third-party applications are on the way. In my opinion (and especially with the iPhone), it's worth waiting for the officially supported apps. All the same, I know if it was me I wouldn't wait, so have fun. :D

I'm talking about the iPhone applications, as in programs you can install on the device.

I'd be using it sort of like a PDA and my new PMP (personal media player). I originally was going to get an HP iPaq 111 (with less than a gig of storage but I could use an SD card with it) and an 8 gig iPod Nano. Then I realized the touch does mostly everything I want from the PDA and I can get 16 gigs as opposed to less than 9 gigs and I save 100 dollars that way. It doesn't quite have all the same things the typical PDA does, chiefly support for office documents stuff comes to mind but I don't really plan on editing office documents on a PDA anyways...
