Apparently, pbow and I are talking about two different things. I'm not talking about how kids should be ignorant of history. I'm talking about how, fairly often, kids are ignorant of the specific meaning of certain objects as symbols, especially when those same symbols are spread throughout other areas of history. To me, that means that those symbols have become closer to irrelevant and, while it doesn't take away from some of the horrors that have happened, it does take away -- as it should if we are making progress -- from the impact of those symbols now. I look forward to the day when the swastika, the Soviet hammer and sickle and the burning cross are just as much a footnote to history as the seal of the Spanish Inquisition is today.
