The Liberty University Lady Flames softball team has announced the addition of a non-conference doubleheader to their schedule as Liberty will host Lynchburg College on April 19, 2006. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at the Liberty Softball Field.

I hope not. I would think that the necessary steps would be taken to reschedule any conference games that had to be made up due to inclement weather.

From what I have heard, the Winthrop (DH) is still in the mix they are looking towards sometime in May, but the game has not been cancelled yet

Wow... it is not that big a deal. Coastal plays a non D-1 and I'm sure other teams do as well. Soccers will play D-2 or D-3 schools, as does football and many other sports... including Men's and Women's basketball. You don't want to play too many, but one a season is no big deal. On top of that, this is a fill in since we missed some possible games in t-neys because of weather. As a fan, I would think we should be happy because it adds a home date to be able to go out and watch the girls play... we don't get many home dates each year, so it should be a good thing.

I'm happy... but I guess I just enjoy watching our teams play any chance I can... I would rather spend my time watching games than second guessing coaches... but everyone has fun in their own way

I'm not calling anyone out on the second guessing... just a little joke... please no more thread wars... we wouldn't want Brokeback to wonder over to the softball page.

smells like there are 2 teams on campus that want to get to 40 wins...this whole cross town thing doesn't work for me, I think they saw it'll be close and why not chalk up 2 more wins to make it more convincing

Every team on campus will play a d-2 or d-3 school every once in a while. Other than maybe Volleyball, I believe every team DID play a d-2 or 3 school this year. Even women's basketball... men's basketball played Lynchburg for heaven's sake. It's not a big deal to try and pick up a game when you've had some rained out in tournaments.

HMO, I'm sure you didn't mean for it to sound this way... but someone might find the comment as being offensive toward Coach Wetmore... like he is trying to stack the deck in favor of winning 40 games even though it might not be best for his team. Like I said, I don't think that is what you meant but it may be taken that way.

Come on, at this point in the season rest is wanted more than more reps...I dont blame him, I think everyone on here with the open date and a team willing would do the same, but let's not act like we're doing favors for LC or something....like I said, I dont blame him, and heck it was a few players that were talking to me about this so they kind of understand the reasoning too...I mean at the end of the day if someone tells you A. You dont play LC and you dont make the tourny or B. you play LC and you make the tourny, then you better do it! you owe it to the girls who have put you in a position to be a few games from in or out

I'll admit, I don't know how the softball selection com. works, but I can't imagine winning two against LC would help get us in... my guess is that he scheduled the game to get some players more at-bats and playing time.

To my knowledge, no BS team has ever gotten an at-large have they? So this would seem to be more toward getting the team ready for the tourney than it is to try and get an at-large... someone who knows the in's and out's of softball, correct me if I'm wrong.

Although I think when the BS gets a little more respect and these 2 games wouldnt be needed it wouldnt be a bad idea to just take the days off, I think they could use the rest, although right now it looks like they will need these two games to secure it, so you cant blame them

Lady Flames Bats Come Alive In Doubleheader Sweep Over Lynchburg College

The Lady Flames’ hit total reached double figures in both games of a doubleheader swept over Lynchburg College, 5-1 and 11-1 in five innings, in a pair of non-conference games played today at the Liberty Softball Field.

With the sweep, the Lady Flames up their record to 31-16 overall this year, marking the first time since the 2000 season that Liberty has reached the 30-win plateau in a season and the sixth time since the program was reinstated in 1994.

In the first game, the Lady Flames jumped out to a quick one run lead in the first inning as Jessica Moore led off the bottom of the inning with a triple down the right field line, while Dawn Jeffs drove her in with a single down the left field line.

The Hornets tied the game in the top of the second as Morgan Austin was struck by a pitch, while Kirstin Swank followed with a RBI double down the right field line to plate pinch runner Brandie Brown and knot the score at 1-1.

Liberty regained the lead for good in the bottom of the second as the Lady Flames capitalized on a two-out error by Lynchburg College as Swank wasn’t able to handle a throw to first that allowed Jessica Leary to reach and keep the inning alive.

Moore was hit by a pitch, while Jeffs followed with a RBI single to center field to plate Leary and allow Liberty to regain the lead. Beth Bennett capped off the inning with a single to the gap in left center field to drive in Moore and Jeffs, giving Liberty a 4-1 edge.

The Lady Flames added an insurance run in the sixth inning as Moore doubled down the left field line, while Jeffs followed with her third RBI single of the game as a ball back up the middle allowed Moore to score the game’s final run.

Sarah Swor allowed just one run on one hit, while striking out six batters in seven innings of work to up her record to 11-8 on the season. Ali Manns suffered the loss as she allowed four total runs, one earned, on five hits in 1 2/3 innings of work, while Micah Smith finished off the final 4 1/3 innings of work by scattering six hits and allowing the final run.

Jeffs recorded her first four-hit game of the year to lead the Lady Flames from the plate as she was 4-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Moore followed as she was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Bennett (2-for-4) and Shannon McKain (2-for-3) also finished with two hits.

In the second game, Moore led off the bottom of the first inning with her team-leading 16th home run of the year, sending a solo shot over the fence in right center field.

Liberty added four more runs in the second inning as a sacrifice fly by Leary allowed Beth Hensley to scored, while third-consecutive singles led to three runs, including a two-RBI base hit down the left line by Jeffs and a RBI single up the middle by Bennett.

Lynchburg College got on the scoreboard in the third inning as the Hornets strung together three-straight hits, starting with a single to right by Brittany Allsop, while two batters later, Lauren Lancaster drove her in with an infield single deep in the hole at shortstop.

However, the Lady Flames put the game out of reach in the fourth inning as Liberty plated six runs on five hits, while Liberty batted around the order.

The six-run frame was highlighted by a RBI double by Sarah Swor, a two-RBI single by Beth Hensley and a pair of RBI base hits by Jeffs and Leary.

Terra Lowe picked up her second win in as many days as the junior scattered six hits and allowed just an unearned run, while striking out five batters to pick up her team-leading 12th victory.

Barbie Miles suffered the loss as she allowed five runs on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings of work, before Larissa Roscher (2.0 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO) and Smith (1/3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB) finished off the rest of the game.

Five of Liberty’s nine starters finished the game with two hits with Jeffs going 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Leary was 2-for-2 with a runs scored and two RBI to lead the squad.

The Lady Flames will begin a four-series conference swing this weekend when they make the “Beach Swing” by squaring off against Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina on Friday and Saturday in a pair of road contests.

3. To give the girls more experience after a few rainouts during the season
