The big dogs (so to speak) come to town for the DH which is underway as I type.

Would be 2 very nice wins for our ladies.

Currently 4-0 LU, top of the 4th.

Jerod with riveting commentary about the marital status of the Lady Flames, no shout out to PAmedic yet.

U/D: top of the 5th, we still lead 4-0.

(all of the runs came in the 1st.)

UPDATE: WE WIN GAME #1, 5-2!

Jerod continuing w/ the smooth delivery. (he's actually doing a nice job- I just don't want him to get a big head)

Flames go down 1, 2, 3 in the second- all 3 struck out, giving the UVa pitcher 6 already- though we hold a slim 1-0 lead early in game #2.

UVa takes the lead w/ a 2 run homer by Sara Larquier (the ACC all time RBI leader) to right in the top of the 3rd. BJ stating that the wind helped it out.

Runners at first and second, 1 down- error charged now to our SS (Jessica Moore, I believe).

make that 2nd and 3rd as the Cavaliers pull off the double steal. Time to amp up the pitching here.

We give up a triple, have now yielded 7 runs and UVa has batted around. STILL only 1 out, we are down 7-1.

now 8-1 as the second baseman can't make the stop and the runner on 3rd scores.

next batter singles down the line and gets aboard while moving the runner up.

2 down now, runners on first and third and we look silly.

We fall for the steal attempt and the runner on third scores. 9-1 UVa: I hope there is a mercy rule.

A flyout ends the inning- FINALLY. Not only did our defense tank- the pitching was no better.

Jerod remarks that UVa "did some damage" that inning. Understatement of the year.

Flames manage to get 2 runners on base here in the bottom of 3rd, runners at 1st and 2nd- 2 down.

so much for that, runners stranded as we give up S/O #9 on the day to end the inning.

Top of the fourth- bases are loaded for UVa w/ only 1 down.

here we go again. I'm a Flames fan but I don't think I can take it.

First pitch swing and we get the force at home, 2 down- bases still loaded

Shot to the gap scores 3 more runs on a stand up double. Put this one in the books as its 12-1, middle of the fourth.

Jerod confirming the slaughter rule may well be in effect.

Another run across, UVa w/ the bases loaded AGAIN- 2 down in the top of the 5th as UVa is at the start of their order AGAIN.

Play at first ends the inning- UVa up 13-1 now.

Lady Flames Split With Cavaliers In Softball Doubleheader
April 4, 2006 · Lynchburg, Va.

For the second-straight day, the Lady Flames split a home non-conference doubleheader as homers by Ashley Williams and Sarah Swor lifted Liberty to a 5-2 opening game victory, while a nine-run third inning helped Virginia to a 13-3 second game win, Tuesday afternoon, at the Liberty Softball Field.

With the twinbill split the Lady Flames up their season record to 25-12 on the year, while the Cavaliers finished the two contests with a 19-16 overall record.

In the first game, the Lady Flames exploded for four runs in the bottom of the first as Jessica Moore led of the frame by drawing a walk, while Dawn Jeffs followed with a single through the right side of the infield.

Beth Bennett kept things going as the freshman dropped a double into the gap in left center field to drive in Moore, while Ashley Williams cleared the bases with her seventh home run of the year as her three-run shot over the fence in left center gave Liberty a 4-0 advantage.

The score remained the same until the sixth inning when Sarah Swor connected on a first pitch solo home run that hit high off the scoreboard in straightaway center field, giving the junior her third home run of the season and Liberty a 5-0 lead.

Starting pitcher Terra Lowe allowed a single through the left side of the infield in the first and a base knock into to left in the second and than proceeded to retire 13-consecutive batters leading into the seventh.

However, the Cavaliers mounted a late game rally in the seventh as Sarah Laraquier led off the inning with a solo home run to right center field, while two batters later, Jessica Taylor got on with a base hit to center field. Erin Horn followed with a base hit to left, which allowed Taylor to advance to third, but the attempted throw to third rolled into Liberty’s dugout, allowing Taylor to scored and put the potential tying run at the plate.

But Lowe was able to settle down and get out of the jam to up her record to 9-6 on the season, tying a career high for the junior in victories, as she allowed one earned run on six hits in her seventh complete game of the year.

Karla Wilburn suffered the loss as she allowed four runs on three hits to the first four batters of the game before Coty Tolar finished off the final six innings by allowing just one additional run on three hits.

Offensively, Jeffs paced the way for Liberty as the second baseman was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with a run scored and a double, while Williams led the team with three RBI on the three-run homer in the first to give the sophomore a new career high with seven round trippers on the year.

In the second game, the Lady Flames kept things going as Jeffs connected on a solo home run to right field to give Liberty the early 1-0 lead in the first inning and the junior her fifth home run of the year.

However, Virginia finally got its offense going in the third inning as the Cavaliers exploded for nine runs on nine hits, while batting around the order to take control of the contest.

The nine-run inning was highlighted by a three-run triple by lead off batter Elea Crockett to center field, a two-run home run by Larquier to right center field and a two-run base hit back up the middle by Whitney Holston.

The Cavaliers continued to add to their lead in the fourth and fifth innings as a three-run double by Lindsey Preuss in the fourth and a RBI base hit by Holston in the fifth gave the visitors a 13-1 edge going into the fifth.

Liberty attempted to get back into the game as pinch hitter Whitney Nixon was able to draw a walk to lead off the inning, while two batters later, Moore connected on her team-leading 14th home run of the year over the wall in left field, but Erin Horn was able to shutdown the rally and end the game in the fifth.

Horn picked up the victory to up her record to 7-6 on the year as she allowed three runs on four hits, while fanning 13 batters in five complete innings of work. Swor suffered the loss as she allowed five runs on six hits in 2 1/3 innings, before Sarah Ellis was roughed up for eight runs on 12 hits in 2 2/3 innings of action.

The Lady Flames mustered just four hits in the second game as Moore was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Jeffs was 1-for-2 with a run scored and a RBI to extend her hitting streak to seven-straight games.

The Lady Flames will continue a five-game homestand on Thursday when they host in-state opponent Longwood for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at the Liberty Softball Field.

yeah, game 2 was brutal but the Ladies played well in game 1, esp the Defense- and that Sarah Laraquier was impressive. She has obviously earned her rep in the ACC. Time to bounce back; the best way to do that is to go out and put a smackdown on Longwood.

LU softball splits twinbill with UVa
By Chris Lang
Lynchburg News & Advance
April 5, 2006

Virginia pitcher Erin Horn was busy slamming the door on Liberty's batters in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.

Her first nine outs came via strikeout. As dominating as she pitched, she wasn't immune to Liberty's power.

No one has been, really.

The Flames cranked four home runs in the doubleheader split to run their total to 41 for the season. Two more homers will tie the school's single-season team record, and Liberty still has 20 regular-season games left.

Ashley Williams hit a three-run shot in the first inning to lead the Flames to a 5-2 victory in the first game. Horn dominated the second game, striking out 12 in five innings as Virginia rode a season-best offensive output to a 13-3 victory.

Liberty's power hasn't just come from one spot in the order. Leadoff hitter Jessica Moore hit her team-leading 14th home run in the second game, and she's clearly the Flames' best hitter.

But six other Flames have connected for at least three home runs. The top five in the order are all capable of hitting for power.

"We've hit multiple home runs with multiple people," Williams said. "We've got a strong hitting team. We've just got to get the defense in line, and the pitching. We've got a lot of power."

Williams, who was slumping heading into Tuesday, got a jolt of confidence from her homer, which gave Liberty (25-12) a 4-0 lead in the first game.

Liberty coach Paul Wetmore said Williams often hit towering home runs in practice, with some of the balls landing deep into the intramural soccer field that sits behind the softball field.

But she's struggled to translate that practice power into game-time pop.

"Her mechanics break down. It's a mental thing," Wetmore said. "She has to realize before she gets up to the plate to get it together and make those mental adjustments."

Horn showed power of a different kind in the second game. Virginia (19-16) fell behind 1-0 after Dawn Jeffs hit a home run to right field, but Horn used a sizzling high fastball to shut down the rest of the Liberty lineup.

When Williams grounded out to short to open the fourth, it was the first out Horn had recorded that wasn't a strikeout.

Earlier this season against Maine, Horn (7-6) threw a no-hitter and struck out 16, so the strikeout total wasn't shocking.

Virginia's offensive output was, however. The Cavaliers had a season-high 18 hits and 13 runs in a game that ended after five innings due to the NCAA's mercy rule.

The Cavaliers sent 13 batters to the plate during a nine-run third inning. Sara Larquier, the ACC's all-time leader in RBIs, hit a two-run homer and Elea Crockett cleared the bases with a triple. Whitney Holston knocked in two with a single.

Larquier set the Virginia school record for career total bases with her five hits in the doubleheader. She now has 420.

"It's a lot of fun when we do string hits together," Horn said. "It's contagious. When one person does well, it seems to make everybody else do well as well."
