It has been a long time since the softball team has done this well. The good thing about this years success so far is that the team is young (No seniors).

Liberty scored two early runs, Sarah Swor came to pick up her first save of the year and shut down the Blue Devils to lead the Lady Flames to a 2-1 win over Central Connecticut, Friday afternoon, in the first game at the Bethune-Cookman Spring Break Classic.

The win marks the Lady Flames’ seventh-straight victory to account for the team’s season best winning streak.

The Lady Flames wasted little time as Liberty took a one-run lead in the top of the first inning as Jessica Moore led off the frame by drawing a walk. After Moore stole second base, Ashley Williams chopped one over the head of Jessica Caron at third into left field to allow Moore to score and give Liberty a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Flames added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning as two fielding errors gave Liberty a 2-0 lead. After getting the first two outs of the inning, Jessica Leary kept the inning alive by reaching first after a fielding error by Melissa Pelletier at shortstop.

Moore followed with a single to right field, while Jeffs grounded to Pelletier again, but the shortstop’s throw to first base sailed down the right field line, allowing Leary to score the insurance run on the throw error.

The Blue Devils cut Liberty’s lead in half in the bottom of the fifth inning as Karen Costes led off the inning with a single to center field, while a wild pitch allowed the left fielder to move into scoring position. After getting back-to-back flyouts, Deb Munson singled to left field, but the ball got passed Beth Hensley and allowed Costes to score from second and pull Central Connecticut State within a run.

However, after the single by Munson, Sarah Swor was brought in to relieve starting pitcher Sarah Ellis and the junior picked up her first save of the season by retiring seven straight batters, including five strikeouts to secure the Lady Flames seventh-straight victory.

Ellis picked up the victory as the starter allowed just the unearned run on five hits, while walking three and striking out four batters.

Samantha Keltos suffered the loss as she allowed two runs on seven hits, while walking five batters and striking out two in a complete-game effort.

Williams led the Lady Flames from the plate as she was 2-for-4 with a RBI, while five other players finished the game with Liberty’s remaining five hits.

Four Run Fourth Give Western Illinois Victory Over Lady Flames At Bethune-Cookman Spring Break Classic

The Westerwinds plated four runs in the fourth and halted a Lady Flames rally in the fifth to pick up a 5-2 victory over Liberty, Friday afternoon, in the team’s second game at the Bethune-Cookman Spring Break Classic.

Coupled with a victory over Central Connecticut State earlier in the day, Liberty’s record now stands at 17-7, while the loss to Western Illinois in the second game snaps the Lady Flames season-best seven game winning streak.

Liberty once again jumped out on top in the first inning as Jessica Moore sent the second pitch of the game over the fence in straightaway center field for her team-leading eighth home run to give Liberty a quick 1-0 lead after one.

Western Illinois evened the game in the bottom of the second inning as Maureen Troller led off the inning with a double to the gap in right center field, while a single by Racheal Heagney back up the middle drove in Troller and knotted the game at 1-1.

The Lady Flames regained the lead in the third as Shannon McKain led off the inning with a double to the wall in left field, while Moore followed with a single to center which Lindsey Hession fielded cleanly and threw to the plate in time to get McKain but catcher Nicole Green dropped the ball to allow McKain to score.

The Westerwinds broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs on four hits starting with a two-RBI single to center field by lead off hitter Ashley Gilland to drive in Green, who started the inning with a walk, and Britt Mason, who got on base with a bunt single to first base.

After a walk was issued to Amy Douglas, Meghan Strazar and Elysha Swider followed with back-to-back RBI base hits to left and center fields, respectively, to drive in Gilland and Douglas and give Western Illinois a 5-2 edge.

The Lady Flames threaten in the top of the fifth inning as Liberty loaded the bases with one out, but relief pitcher Kamren Ferguson struck out two-straight batters to eliminate the threat, while she retired eight out of the next nine batters to pick up the save and secure the victory.

Christina Drankiewicz picked up the victory as she allowed two runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings of work, while Ferguson picked up the save by allowing just one hit in 2 2/3 innings of action as she struck out seven batters.

Terra Lowe suffered the loss as she allowed four runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings of work, while Sarah Swor finished off the final 2 1/3 innings of work by allowing one run on three hits.

Moore led the Lady Flames offensively as she finished the game a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with a run scored and a RBI, marking a season high in hits for Moore in a game.

The Lady Flames return to action tomorrow for two more round robin games as Liberty will face Bethune-Cookman (2 p.m.) and Iowa State (6 p.m.) to determine their seeding in the championship round of the Bethune-Cookman Spring Break Classic on Sunday.

LU with 2 wins today. Beat Iowa State 2-1 and Bethune Cookman since our record is 19-7. Don't have a score for the BC game but I know we won due to our record. Hopefully can finish this tourny strong tomorrow.

Cyclones Use Extra Base Hits To Down Lady Flames In Bethune-Cookman Spring Break Classic Championship Game

March 19, 2006 · Daytona Beach, Fla.

All six of Iowa State’s hits went for extra bases to lead the Cyclones to a 4-1 victory over Liberty, Sunday afternoon, in the championship game of the Bethune-Cookman Spring Break Classic.

The loss drops the Lady Flames to 19-8 on the season and wraps up Liberty’s Spring Break run that saw the Lady Flames finish the week-plus set of games with a 9-4 record.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning as the Cyclones used three extra base hits to plate two runs and take a 2-0 lead. Lead off batter Fallon Johnson got things started with a double down the left field line, while two batters later Ashley Killeen doubled to the wall in left center field to drive in Johnson.

Katie Reichling followed with a triple down the right field line to plate pinch runner Stephanie Mosley and give Iowa State a two-run advantage.

Iowa State added to its lead in the top of the sixth inning as Ellen Buehner grounded back to Terra Lowe in the circle, but the starting pitcher wasn’t able to handle the ball, while Ashley Killeen followed on the very next at bat with a two-run homer over the fence in left field to give the Cyclones a 4-0 lead.

The Lady Flames finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning as Jessica Moore led off the frame with her team leading ninth home run as she hit an opposite field shot over the fence to right center field to cut Iowa State’s lead to 4-1.

But that was all that Liberty could muster as starting pitcher Amie Ford was able to keep the Lady Flames from mounting a rally to pick up the victory. Ford scattered four hits and allowed one run in six innings of work, while striking out four batters, before Alyssa Ranson finished off the final inning with one strikeout.

Lowe suffered the loss as she allowed three earned runs on five hits, while striking out five batters in 5 1/3 innings of work before Sarah Ellis finished off the final 1 2/3 innings of work by allowing just one hit.

Liberty’s top four hitters all finished the game 1-for-3, while Moore finished with a run scored and a RBI.

The Lady Flames return to action on Wednesday when they host James Madison at the Liberty Softball Field for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch of the first game is slated for 2 p.m.

Five out of Liberty’s 10 total hits went for extra bases helping the Lady Flames to 6-1 victory over host Bethune-Cookman, Saturday afternoon, at the Bethune-Cookman Spring Break Classic.

Liberty jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Jessica Moore led off the game with a single through the left side of the infield, while Ashley Williams tripled to the gap in right center field to drive in Moore.

Beth Hensley followed with an infield single as she lined one off the glove of Christina Trimble at third base to drive in Williams and give Liberty a two-run lead.

Bethune-Cookman trimmed the lead in half in the bottom half of the inning as lead off batter Tiffany Bowser reached first on a bunt single down the third base line. After stealing both second and third base, Bowser scored on a fielder’s choice play by Andrea Thomas to cut Liberty’s lead to 2-1.

The Lady Flames added to their lead in the top of the third inning as Dawn Jeffs led off the game with a triple to the wall in left field, while Beth Bennett slapped one through the left side of the infield for a base hit to drive in Jeffs.

After Bennett advanced to second on a wild pitch, the starting first baseman scored as Sarah Swor dropped in a double to the gap in right center field to give Liberty a 4-1 lead.

The Lady Flames added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning as Jeffs led off the frame with a double off the top of the wall in right center field, while Williams traded places with her with a double to the gap in right center field.

After a groundout moved Williams to third, Swor grounded to third base, but the ball went through Andrea Thomas’ legs, allowing Williams to score the unearned run and push Liberty’s lead to its final margin of 6-1.

Sarah Ellis upped her record to 5-0 on the year as the scattered four hits over seven innings of work, while striking and walking three batters en route to her fourth complete game of the season. Alana Gaines suffered the loss as she allowed four runs on six hits in 2 1/3 innings of work while Viveca Patterson finished off the final 4 2/3 innings by allowing one earned run on four hits.

Liberty’s top four hits all finished the game 2-for-4 with Jeffs and Williams scoring twice, while Moore and Bennett each scored once.
