Jeffs Propels Lady Flames To Victory With Seventh-Inning Home Run
Dawn Jeffs hit a three-run homer to propel Liberty to a 3-2 win over the College of Charleston.

February 24, 2007
Kennesaw, Ga.

The Lady Flames were finally able to capitalize on a scoring opportunity as Dawn Jeffs hit a three-run walk-off home run to give Liberty a 3-2 win over the College of Charleston, Saturday afternoon, in the Lady Flames’ first game at the KSU Classic.

the contest remained scoreless until the top of the third inning as Izmena Cabrera led off the frame with a single through the left side of the infield, followed by Amber Shifflett drawing a walk.

Both runners advanced on a ground out by Kristie Shiffleff, while Cabrera scored the game’s first run after a Sarah Swor wild pitch allowed the pair of runners to advance another base. Jennifer Golden followed by drawing the second walk of the inning, setting up the next scoring play.

Golden got caught in a rundown attempting to steal second and was tagged out at first, but Amber Shifflett took advantage of the pick-off play and stole home, giving the Cougars as 2-0 lead.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh inning where Beth Hensley led off the frame by drawing a walk, followed by a base hit through the left side of the infield by J’nae Jefferson.

Liberty, who entered the inning having left eight runners on base, finally got one to cross the plate in dramatic fashion as Dawn Jeffs connected on an opposite-field home run. Her three-run homer over the fence in left-center field plated Hensley and Jefferson and gave the Lady Flames a 3-2 victory.

Jeffs led the Lady Flames from the plate as she was 3-for-4 with three RBI coming on the walk-off round-tripper. Jessica Moore followed as the center fielder was 2-for-3, while Jefferson (1-for-4), Ashley Williams (1-for-3) and Swor (1-for-3) collected Liberty’s remaining hits.

Swor picked up the victory to up her record to 2-0 on the year as she scattered seven hits and allowed two runs. Terri Mesko was the tough-luck loser as the hurler fanned 10 batters and allowed three runs on eight hits in a complete-game effort.

Hometown Hero Leads Lady Flames To 6-2 Win Over Kennesaw State
Ashley Williams was 2-for-3 with three RBI in Liberty's 6-2 win over Kennesaw State on Saturday

February 24, 2007
Kennesaw, Ga.

The Lady Flames plated three runs in the first and three more in the fourth and fifth inning en route to a 6-2 win over host Kennesaw State, Saturday night, in the final game of the first day of the KSU Classic.

After the pair of victories, including a 3-2 win over the College of Charleston earlier in the day, the Lady Flames move to 4-1 on the season.

The Lady Flames used the momentum from the first game to jump out to an early lead as Liberty plated three runs during its time at the plate. J’nae Jefferson led off the inning with a single down the right-field line. Dawn Jeffs followed with a single to left field, while Jefferson was forced out at third on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Jessica Moore.

Ashley Williams followed with a two-RBI double sharply hit down the left-field line, driving in Jeffs and Moore. After a groundout to second by Beth Bennett moved the runner, Williams gave the Lady Flames their third run of the frame as the catcher was able to score from third on a wild pitch.

The homestanding Owls used a two-out rally in the top of the third to get on the scoreboard as Keri McKee got a single back up the middle. Jennifer Nolan followed with a single down the left-field line, which left fielder Beth Hensley wasn’t able to keep the ball in front of her, allowing McKee to score from first and trim Liberty’s lead to 3-1.

The Lady Flames were able to push their lead back to three runs in the fourth inning as Liberty loaded the bases. Beth Bennett led off the frame by drawing a walk, followed by singles back up the middle off the bats of Michelle Fridey and Jessica Leary. The Owls changed pitchers, bringing in reliever Janet Kearns, who wasn’t able to control one of her pitches, allowing pinch runner Rachel Love to score from third and to give Liberty a 4-1 edge.

Liberty added two insurance runs in the top the fifth to put the game out of reach. Jeffs led off the frame with a double to left field, while Jessica Moore traded places with the second baseman as Moore drove in Jeffs with a RBI single up the middle.

Williams followed with a RBI base knock straight back up the middle to plate Moore and push Liberty’s lead to 6-1. The homestanding Owls were able to capitalize on a Liberty error to plate one run on a RBI double by McKee, but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Flames claimed their second-straight victory of the day.

Williams, who hails from Lilburn, Ga., which is 35 miles southwest of Kennesaw, finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Jeffs was also 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Sarah Ellis tossed her second-straight complete game as the sophomore scattered seven hits and allowed two unearned runs, two walks and four strikeouts.

The Lady Flames will close out action at the KSU Classic with two more games against the same two squads tomorrow. Liberty opens the day against the College of Charleston at Noon, followed by a 2 p.m. contest against host Kennesaw State.

Cougars Rally with Four in the Sixth To Down Lady Flames
Jessica Moore was 2-for-4 in Liberty's loss to the College of Charleston at the KSU Classic.
February 25, 2007
Kennesaw, Ga.

The College of Charleston used a four-run sixth inning to take control and hold on for a 5-4 victory over Liberty, Sunday morning, in the Lady Flames’ third game at the KSU Classic.

Unlike Liberty’s first meeting against the Cougars where the Lady Flames didn’t score until the seventh inning in their 3-2 victory yesterday, Liberty jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning to open the day against the College of Charleston.

Dawn Jeffs got an infield single with a ball hit deep in the hole at second, followed by a RBI double to the fence in left-center field by Ashley Williams to drive in Jeffs.
Beth Bennett kept things going for Liberty with a second infield hit, but shortstop Brittany Small’s attempted throw to first got past first baseman Jennifer Golden, allowing Williams to score and give Liberty an early 2-0 edge.

The College of Charleston trimmed the two-run lead in half during the third inning, thanks to a pair of extra base hits. Katie Pesature opened the frame with a double to the fence in right center, followed by a two-base hit to the gap in left center by Izmena Cabrera two batters later to drive in Pesature and cut the lead to 2-1.

Liberty took advantage of a few miscues by the Cougars in the top of the fourth inning to push its lead to three runs. Starting pitcher Terri Mesko looked like she was going to get out of the inning as J’nae Jefferson grounded to shortstop, but the ball was mishandled to extend the inning.

The mistakes continued for the College of Charleston as Jessica Leary, who reached on a fielder’s choice earlier in the inning, scored on a wild pitch, followed by a base hit through the right side of the infield by Jeffs, driving in Jefferson from second for a 4-1 Liberty lead.

However, the Cougars exploded for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take control of the game. Kristie Shifflett led off the frame with a single to center field, followed by Jennifer Golden’s third home run of the year, a two-run blast to left-center field.

Shannon Howard kept things rolling for the Cougars with a double to gap in left-center field. After advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Small, Howard scored on a passed ball to knot the score at four-all. Presature dropped in a single to right field, moving Katie Sansouci, who reached on a walk, into scoring position.

Three batters later, Amber Shifflett singled back up the middle, plating Sansouci to give the College of Charleston a 5-4 lead. Sansouci, who relieved Terri Mesko in the top of the fourth, got the Lady Flames to go down in order in the top of the seventh, to secure the victory.

Sansouci moved to 2-1 on the year with the victory in relief as she allowed one hit in 3 1/3 innings of work. Terra Lowe suffered the loss for the Lady Flames as she allowed five runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings of work, dropping her record to 0-2 on the season.

Liberty’s two (Jeffs), three (Moore) and four (Williams) hitters in the line-up all finished the game 2-for-4 with Jeffs and Williams adding a run scored and a RBI each.

The Lady Flames will face host Kennesaw State in their final game of the KSU Classic, starting at 2 p.m.

Nolan’s Three-Run Blast Lifts Owls Past Lady Flames In Extra Innings
Sarah Ellis tossed 4 2/3 innings of effective relief before surrendering a three-run home run in the ninth against Kennesaw State in Liberty's final game at the KSU Classic.

February 25, 2007
Kennesaw, Ga.

In a traditional college softball pitcher’s duel, it was a home run that decided the game as Jennifer Nolan’s three-run walk-off blast to left-center field in the ninth lifted Kennesaw State to a 3-0 victory over Liberty, Saturday afternoon, in Game 5 of the KSU Classic.

the contest was a true pitcher’s duel as the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the ninth inning.

Sarah Hesterman started the inning by being placed at second base as part of the international tiebreaker rule. The Lady Flames intentionally walked Keri McKee to set up a force play at any base, but that didn’t matter as Jennifer Nolan connected on the second pitch she saw in her at bat, sending the 1-0 pitch well over the fence in left-center field to give the homestanding Owls the 3-0 victory.

Both clubs had multiple chances during the game as the two teams combined to leave 22 runners on base. Liberty scattered its five hits during the game over five separate innings, leaving eight runners on base. The Lady Flames best scoring opportunity came in the top of the ninth as Liberty loaded the bases with two outs; however, Michelle Fridey struck out looking to end the potential threat.

Kennesaw State tallied 14 LOB during the contest, including the third, fourth and eighth innings when they left the bases loaded without scoring.

Jessica Moore led the Lady Flames from the plate as the center fielder was 2-for-4. Jeffs was 1-for-4, pushing her hitting streak to four-straight games. Fridey (1-for-4) and Beth Hensley (1-for-3) tallied Liberty’s final two hits.

Sarah Ellis was the tough-luck loser, falling to 2-1 on the year. The sophomore scattered five hits over her first 4 2/3 innings of work, striking out six batters, before surrendering the three-run blast. Sarah Swor started the game and allowed four hits over 3 1/3 innings of action where she was relieved in the fourth with runners at second and third.

Brittany Matthews upped her record to 4-2 on the year, allowing five hits in the complete-game effort. Matthews fanned 12 batters on the day, marking a season high for Liberty and the third time in seven games Liberty has struck out 10 or more times in a game.

With the pair of losses, the Lady Flames fall to 4-3 on the season. The Lady Flames return to the softball diamond on Friday when they begin competition at the Tar Heel Classic, hosted by North Carolina.

Liberty faces Princeton (10 a.m.) and Marshall (12:15 p.m.) on Friday, followed by a contest against Rhode Island (10 a.m.) on Saturday to round out pool-play. Tournament-play starts late on Saturday and continues on Sunday with the championship game scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
