Lady Flames Open Hawaii Spring Fling With 6-5 Win Over Boston College
Sarah Swor was one of four players to record two hits agaisnt Boston College as she was 2-for-4 in the victory.
March 7, 2007
Honolulu, Hawaii

Liberty let a four-run lead slip away, but the Lady Flames still managed to open their play at the Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling Tournament with a victory in a 6-5 eight-inning win over Boston College, Wednesday afternoon, at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Both teams manufactured runs during their first at bats, leaving the game tied 1-1 after the first inning. An RBI single straight up the middle by Britney Thompson plated lead-off hitter Carley McNary, with Liberty answering back in its half of the frame as Beth Bennett dropped in an RBI single to the gap in left center field to score J’nae Jefferson, tying the game at one-apiece.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth inning when Liberty exploded for four runs to take its first lead of the contest. Jefferson started the four-run outburst with an infield single down the first base line, followed by Moore’s two-run home run to center field, her fourth of the year.

Ashley Williams kept things going as the catcher was struck by a pitch followed by a walk issued to Bennett. Two batters later, Sarah Swor singled up the middle to drive in pinch runner Rachel Love, followed by Courtney Johnson lofting a fly ball to right field, allowing Bennett to cross the plate and give Liberty a 5-1 lead.

Boston College cut Liberty’s lead in half in the top of the sixth inning as an infield error off a batted ball by Renee Ramos allowed pinch runner Amanda Brooks to score. Two batters later, McNary dropped in a single just over Dawn Jeffs’ glove at second base, allowing Ramos to score and trim Liberty’s lead to 5-3.

The Eagles tied the game in the top of the seventh inning as Jenna Macchi led off the frame with a single back up the middle, followed by a two-run homer to straightaway center field by Thompson, knotting the game at 5-5.

Liberty failed to score in the bottom off the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. Boston College managed to advance its international tiebreaker rule runner to third with one out, but Terra Lowe got a strikeout and a pop-up to shortstop to end the threat.

The Lady Flames loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning with one out and it looked like the Eagles were going to escape the threat as well. Taylor Peyton got a strikeout and a groundball to second base, but Destito was unable to handle the ball, allowing pinch runner Michelle Fridey to score from third and give Liberty the victory.

Lowe evened her record at 2-2 on the year as she relieved Sarah Ellis and allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on three hits in three innings of work. Ellis allowed two runs on seven hits in five innings of work en route to the no decision.

The Lady Flames pounded out double-digit hits for the fourth time in the last five games with 10 hits. Four different Liberty players finished with multiple hits, including Jeffs (2-for-5), Jefferson (2-for-3 with two runs), Moore (2-for-5 with the two-run homer) and Swor (2-for-4). With their hits during the contest, both Jeffs and Moore pushed their hitting streaks to 10-straight games.

Host Hawaii Holds Lady Flames Offense In Check In 6-0 Victory Liberty
Courtney Johnson recorded one of Liberty's three hits (1-for-2) and she added eight assists in a solid defensive effort at third base.
March 7, 2007
Honolulu, Hawaii

Liberty, who entered the game having pounded out 10 or more hits in four of its previous five games, could only muster three against host Hawaii, falling 6-0 to the Wahine in the final game of Day 1 at the Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling Tournament, Wednesday evening at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Hawaii, who just fell out of the Top 25 as announced prior to the game, jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as Claire Warwick reached base by virtue of a fielder’s choice. The third baseman moved to second on an infield groundout, followed by Tyleen Tausaga’s RBI single through the left side of the infield to drive in Warwick and give Hawaii a 1-0 lead.

Hawaii continued to add to its lead in the bottom of the second inning as Valana Manuma scored on a groundout to start a four-run frame. Leadoff hitter Tanisha Milca continued with a two-run home run to straightaway center field, followed by a solo round tripped to left center field by Warwick to push the homestanding Wahine’s lead to 5-0.

Hawaii added its final run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning as Warwick led off the frame with a single back up the middle. After moving to second on a stolen base and to third on a base hit up the middle by Tausaga, Warwick was able to cross the plate on a long fly ball as Jessica Moore robbed Kate Robinson of a double with a running catch in the gap in left center field with the fly out allowing Warwick to score.
Liberty mustered just three hits on the evening against Justine Smethurst, who recorded the shutout victory as she walked two and struck out nine batters in seven innings of work.

Two of the three hits came off the bat of Dawn Jeffs as the senior was 2-for-3 with two doubles, extending her hitting streak to 12-straight games.

Courtney Johnson, who had a stellar game at the hot corner with several solid defensive plays that led to eight assists, recorded Liberty’s other hit with a single through the left side of the infield in the third. Jessica Moore finished the game 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, ending her hitting streak at 11 games.

Dana Wheeler suffered her first collegiate loss as the freshman allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on four hits in 1 2/3 innings of work to fall to 1-1 on the year. Sarah Ellis finished off the final 4 1/3 innings of the game by allowing one run on three hits.

With the split on the day, the Lady Flames’ record moves to 9-5 on the year. Liberty will continue pool play action in the Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling Tournament tomorrow when they face Pacific (10 a.m. local time) and No. 14 Oregon State (2 p.m. local time).

Tigers Score Four In The Eighth To Down Lady Flames At Hawaii Spring Fling

March 8, 2007
Honolulu, Hawaii

For the second-straight day, Liberty went to extra innings but this time the Lady Flames came up on the short end of the game as Pacific scored four runs in the eighth to down Liberty, 7-3, in eight innings at Day 2 of the Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling Tournament, hosted by Hawaii at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

In the first game against Pacific, the Tigers wasted little time taking a lead in the contest as Pacific plated two runs on three hits in the top of the first. Leadoff hitter Gina Carbonatto started the frame with a bunt single down the first base line.

After moving to second on a groundout, Carbonatto scored on a base hit to the gap in right center by Jennifer Curtier. A stolen base and another groundout moved Curtier to third where she was able to score on a base hit back up the middle by Lauren Weyman, giving the Tigers as 2-0 lead.

Liberty evened the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to back-to-back hits. Ashley Williams got things started for the Lady Flames with a base hit to center field. Beth Bennett followed by battling off several foul balls to get her timing down and hit a two-run home run to left center field. The home run was her fourth of the year, tying for the team lead.

But the tie game was short lived as the Tigers put together a two-out rally to regain the lead, 3-2. Carbonatto singled back up the middle, sending a bounding ball over Sarah Ellis’ glove in the circle. Carbonatto swiped Pacific’s second base of the game to move to second, followed by a seeing-eye single into left field by Lizzie Hagen, driving in Carbonatto and giving the Tigers a one-run lead.

However, Liberty answered back quickly in the bottom half of the frame by capitalizing on a Tiger error to knot the game at 3-3. Dawn Jeffs singled back up the middle to extend her hitting streak to 12-straight games.

J’nae Jefferson followed by grounding to shortstop, but Hagen threw the ball into right field trying to get the lead runner, allowing Jeffs to move to third base, followed by Jessica Moore’s RBI single to right field to tie the game.

Neither team could muster a run over the final two frames, sending the game into extra innings where the Tigers plated four runs on five hits to secure their first victory of the tournament in the top of the eighth inning.

The scoring outburst started with an infield single by Lauren Weyman, allowing Hagen to score, followed by Karie Wilson’s RBI double to the gap in left center field to drive in pinch runner Vanney Campos.

Another infield single by Nicole Gradwohl allowed Weyman to cross the plate. Two batters later, Carbonatto got her third hit of the game with a RBI single up the middle to plate Karie Wilson and give the Tigers all the runs they would need.

Ellis suffered the loss for the Lady Flames as the sophomore allowed 12 hits, tying a career high, along with six earned runs, two walks, two strikeouts in 8.0 innings of work to fall to 4-2.

Jeffs led the Lady Flames with her 11th multiple hit game of the year by going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Liberty’s three, four, five and hitters recorded Liberty’s other hits as Moore, Williams, Bennett were each 1-for-4 and Swor was 1-for-3.

Lady Flames Rally Falls Short In 4-2 Loss To 14th-Ranked Oregon State

March 8, 2007
Honolulu, Hawaii

Liberty pushed the Beavers to the final out as the Lady Flames plated two runs in the seventh and had the bases loaded, but 14th-ranked Oregon State was able to fend off Liberty’s charge for a 4-2 victory, closing out Liberty’s action in Day 2 of the Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling Tournament, hosted by Hawaii at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

With the pair of losses, the Lady Flames’ record falls to 9-7 on the year. The tournament moves to championship play starting tomorrow. Liberty’s opponent will be determined based upon the results of this evening’s game.

In the second game against Oregon State, the Beavers took advantage off a lead-off walk to Sherina Galvin to start the second inning. After moving to second on a stolen base, Galvin was able to cross the plate on a RBI base hit through the left side off the infield by Paige Lowe, giving Oregon State a 1-0 edge.

The Beavers added to their lead in the top of the third inning as Natalie Johnson led off the inning with a single straight back up the middle, followed by a two-run homer by Cambria Miranda high off the netting in left field, giving Oregon State a 3-0 lead.

Oregon State tacked on an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning as Stefanie Ewing connected on a solo home run to left field, pushing the Beaver lead to four runs, 4-0.

However, Liberty mounted a rally in the top of the seventh that pushed Oregon State to the final out as the Lady Flames plated two runs on four hits and left the bases loaded as the game ended.

Beth Hensley started the rally with a double to the gap in right center, followed by an infield single off the bat of pinch hitter Taylor McCarty in her first collegiate plate appearance. Fellow pinch hitter Kristina Jerry grounded out to shortstop, allowing Hensley to score, with McCarthy moving to third on the plate.

Jeffs dropped in an infield hit that scored McCarty, followed by Jefferson being struck by a pitch to give Liberty runners at first and second with one out.

Jessica Moore almost ended the game as the senior lifted one to the fence in straightaway center field, but Johnson was able to snag the ball at the warning track.
Ashley Williams drilled a shot down the third base line and legged out an infield single to load the bases with two outs, but Brianne McGowan got Beth Bennett to pop up just behind third base to end the threat and secure the victory for the Beavers.

Sarah Swor suffered the loss as the senior allowed four runs on eight hits in a complete-game effort to fall to 2-2 on the season.

Jeffs led the Lady Flames from the plate as the senior pushed her hitting streak to 13-straight games by going 2-for-4 with a RBI. Bennett was also 2-for-4 and both Hensley and McCarthy were 1-for-1 with a run scored.
