Another member of the Tincher family is going to pitch in college.
James River High School senior pitcher Abby Tincher said Tuesday she has verbally committed to Liberty University. Tincher, the younger sister of former James River and Virginia Tech great Angela Tincher, said she received a softball scholarship offer from new Flames coach Dot Richardson last month.
“To be at a college where everyone puts God first … that’s the best thing ever,” Abby Tincher said.
Tincher said she became interested in the Liberty softball program after visiting the university last fall.
“I wasn’t really considering softball for college at all,” she said. “A lot of people thought, ‘You’re Angela Tincher’s little sister, that’s going to be [the plan],’ but I had kind of decided I was going to pursue music and arts and other things and was just going to be a normal student. But I went to Liberty and I realized this is a pretty big-time school, it’s not just a place I can go and necessarily pay my way easily.
“I knew the Lord wanted me there and I did what I had to do to get there.”
She was already a good pitcher, but she began working to make herself an NCAA Division I prospect. She was coached by her father, Denny, who has tutored Angela Tincher and a number of other area pitchers.
