Blazers off to Guelph

The Brampton Blazers are sending five more players to NCAA softball next season.
The Blazers, who have sent more than 20 players south of the border since 2001, have one of the more successful women's softball programs in North America when it comes to producing college players.
Al Spohn's midget team has five players already committed for next season. There are already two players on the midgets who have completed their freshman years in the U.S. and a couple of more that could finalize deals to begin school in January.
Spohn said the Blazers are becoming known for producing the kind of players universities want.
"They are good students,'' said Spohn. "We are getting calls (from schools), the program is known.''
For the Blazers many of their early season games have been against top American teams, including seven games at a tournament in Pennsylvania where the Blazers lost in the gold semifinals.
The list of Blazers headed south beginning in the fall includes Kristina Jerry, going to Liberty University, a Division I school in Lynchburg Virginia.
Most of these players have worked their way up through the Blazers system and attended school in Brampton.
Jerry has played third base, and the outfield for the Blazers and had compiled a .316 on base percentage in 20 games.
Besides playing a strong schedule of tournaments, the Blazers are also heading to the national championships from Sunday to Aug. 13 in Guelph.
They qualified by finishing third at the recent provincials in Brampton.
The Chinguacousy Cougars, who won the provincials, have also qualified for the nationals.
