RADFORD, Va. – The third-seeded Liberty Lady Flames’ Jessica Moore posted her 19th homerun of the season as LU plated three runners in the second and never looked back to pick up the 4-1 win over Texas A&M Corpus-Christi in game three of the 2006 Big South Softball Championship presented by Aéropostale.
With the win, Liberty improves to 39-21, while the Islanders fall to 9-34.
Liberty jumped on top 1-0 in the bottom of the first, plating one runner. Dawn Jeffs singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Beth Bennett plated Jeffs with a single to center field and moved to second on the throw home.
Liberty moved three runners across to extend its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Terra Lowe reached on a throwing error by Islander short stop Stephanie Estrada. Jessica Lerry brought in Lowe as she singled to center, advancing to second on an error. Moore cleared the bases with a two run homer over the centerfield wall.
Texas A&M-CC’s Caitlin Kessler cut the lead to 4-1 with a solo homer, but that would be as close as the Islanders would get.
Liberty’s Terra Lowe picked up the win and improves to 15-9. Taking the loss for the Islanders was Amanda Foster, falling to 6-14.
With the win the Liberty now play the No. 2 Radford at 7:45pm. The Islanders will now play Charleston Southern in the first round of the consolation bracket at 11:00am on Friday, May 12.
Liberty Head Coach Paul Wetmore
“Terra Lowe did a great job in relief for us today and settled into good rhythm to finish of the game. Jessica Moore, Dawn Jeffs and Ashley Williams all came through with some timely hitting to give us the lead and then we played some solid defense to finish the game. This was a good start for us in this tournament as we certainly wanted to start with a solid victory.”Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Head Coach Dawn Wuthrich
“We were not ready mentally today. When you get to this level, you have to bring your “A” game and we didn’t do that. We need to hit the ball better otherwise we will be going home in two.”
