CONWAY, S.C. – Beth Bennett’s two-out RBI single in the top of the eighth inning gave Liberty a 2-1 extra inning victory over Coastal Carolina in the first game of a scheduled Big South doubleheader, while the second one was called due to inclement weather Saturday afternoon at CCU Softball Field.
With the victory, the Lady Flames up their record to 34-16 on the season, while Liberty remains undefeated in league play with a 5-0 record. Earlier in the afternoon, Radford dropped its first conference game of the year to Charleston Southern, leaving Liberty as the only undefeated team in the league and atop of the conference standings.
The Chanticleers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Sarah Hostetler led off the frame with a double to the fence in right field. After moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by Glynn Tolleson, Hostetler scored the game’s first run on a wild pitch to give Coastal Carolina a 1-0 advantage.
The score remained the same until the top of the sixth inning when Jessica Leary led off the inning with a single back up the middle. After advancing to second base on a wild pitch, Beth Bennett came up with a two-out double to right field, plating Leary and knotting the game at 1-1.
Coastal Carolina had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the seventh inning when the Chanticleers were issued three walks in the frame to load the bases, including a pair of two out walks, but starting pitcher Sarah Swor got pinch hitter Lynee Hastings to strikeout out looking to end the threat.
In the top of the eighth inning, pinch hitter Sarah Love struck out looking to start the frame, while Jessica Moore was walked to give Liberty runners at first and second that included pinch runner Erika Rasmussen, who was placed at second base to start the inning as part of the international tiebreaker rule.
After Christine Doyle got Jeffs to strike out for the second out of the inning, Bennett came through for the Lady Flames again with a single down the left field line to plate Rasmussen and give Liberty a 2-1 lead.
The Chanticleers once again threatened in the bottom of the eighth inning as Coastal Carolina had runners on second and third with just one out, but Meagen Johnson lined out to second base, while Jeffs was able to catch Glynn Tolleson off the bag at second to double the catcher up and end the game.
Swor picked up the victory to up her record to 13-8 on the season by scattering three hits over eight innings of work, while allowing a run and striking out eight batters.
Doyle suffered the tough luck loss as she allowed two runs, with just one being earned, while striking out seven and giving up six hits.
Offensively, the Lady Flames were paced by Bennett as the freshman finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Williams (1-for-4), Beth Hensley (1-for-3) and Leary (1-for-2) recorded the team’s remaining three hits.
Inclement weather surrounded the entire day the scheduled 1 p.m. game didn’t start until 5:35 p.m. and after a 65 minute weather delay at the start of the second game, the contest was called.
The Lady Flames will put their undefeated conference record on the line this Wednesday when they travel to Radford, Va. to take on Radford. The league twinbill against the Highlanders is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Lady Flames Fall To Coastal Carolina In Second Game Of Make-Up Doubleheader
May 6, 2006
Conway, S.C.
» Box Score

It took an extra few days, but Coastal Carolina and Liberty were finally able to make up the second game of their scheduled April 22 doubleheader with Coastal Carolina taking the game, 5-0, Saturday afternoon, at CCU Softball Field.

The two teams were only able to get one game in on April 22 as inclement weather surrounded the entire day, forcing the Lady Flames to return to Coastal due to the Big South Conference’s make-up policy. Liberty won the first game 2-1 on an eighth inning base hit by Beth Bennett.

With the loss, the Lady Flames’ record falls to 38-19 on the season and 7-3 in Big South Conference play. Liberty still stands three wins short of the school record for wins in a season as the 1999 squad won 41 games.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the second inning when Kristina Shepard started the frame with a single to right field. Pitcher Christine Doyle laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Shepard into scoring position, but Dawn Jeffs was unable to handle the throw at first base, allowing Shepard to move to third on the play.

And Coastal Carolina would take advantage of the mistake as three batters later, Sara Hostetler was able to come up with a two-out single to right field to plate Shepard and give the Chanticleers an early 1-0 lead.

The Chanticleers added to their lead in the third inning as Meagen Johnson connected on her team-leading 16th home run of the season, sending a solo shot over the fence in right field. Ashley Gerdts followed by drawing a walk, while two batters later, Doyle dropped in a double to the gap in right center field to plate Gerdts and give Coastal Carolina a 3-0 edge.

Coastal Carolina added an insurance run in the fourth inning as Hostetler was issued a walk to start the inning, while Allison Cantrell followed with a single bunt base hit just in front of the pitcher’s circle. After a wild pitch allowed both runners to advance, Johnson was issued an intentional walk to load the bases, while a pass ball allowed everyone to advance and score Hostetler to give the Chanticleers a 4-0 lead.

Johnson put an exclamation mark on the afternoon as she connected on another solo home run to left field in the sixth inning, giving her second of the day and 17th of the year to give Coastal Carolina its final run of the afternoon.

Doyle upped her record to 16-7 on the season as she scattered two hits over six innings of work, while fanning seven batters before Johnson finished off the final inning in relief by striking out the side.

Terra Lowe suffered the loss for the Lady Flames and falls to 14-8 on the season as she was roughed up for three runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings of work, before Sarah Ellis (1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) and Sarah Swor (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) finished off the game.

Liberty mustered up just two hits on the afternoon as Beth Bennett had a first inning double to right field, while Swor had a single to right in the fifth inning.

The Lady Flames will conclude their regular schedule on Monday when they host Winthrop in Big South doubleheader at the Liberty Softball Field. First pitch of the afternoon is scheduled for 3 p.m.
