As the college baseball season winds down at all three NCAA Divisions (I, II, III) all eyes have been on conference tournaments and at-large NCAA tournament berths.
The University of Mary Washington, a perennial power in the D-III Capital Athletic Conference, was on the cusp of making the Big Dance but found out this past week the Eagles’ season was over after a runner-up finish in the CAC tourney and a 26-14 record were not enough to get an at-large berth.
But as with most UMW baseball seasons under the direction of veteran coach Tom Sheridan, the season was a success, especially for former Thomas Dale standout Frank Sheffield.
Sheffield, a 6-2 190-pound sophomore, played in 34 of 40 games had a .364 batting average with five doubles, three triples and 26 RBI in 32 starts.
