Here is another former LU football coach that most on here probably aren't very familiar with right now. But I am sure Hburg and Flameshaw can tell a story or two.

At the time of his retirement from coaching earlier in the decade, he was in the top ten all-time in NAIA coaching victories.

And in case you are wondering, I am still trying to get the Georgetown records in there. The girl who is their SID doesn't seem interested in replying to my e-mails.

Tom Dowling elected to Georgetown College Sports Hall of Fame in 2005

Tom Dowling, class of 1961, contributed to the re-building of the Georgetown College football program both as a player, assistant coach, and head coach.

Dowling was the Tigers’ Defensive Coordinator from 1969 until 1973. Georgetown College was continuously ranked in the nation’s top ten in defense among NAIA schools.

From 1973-1977 Dowling took the reigns as head coach of the. He led the Tigers to a NAIA national rankings of 16th in 1974, 17th in 1975 and 11th in 1976.

After leaving Georgetown College, Dowling was named Small College Coach of the Year at Liberty Baptist College. After starting the football program at Cumberland College, he was twice named Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year and in 1995 was the ninth winningest coach in the NAIA.

Dowling went on to further distinguish himself by serving as Mid-South Conference commissioner from 1995-2002.

Tom Dowling, the first coach ever for the University of the Cumberlands football program (then Cumberland College), and former Commissioner of the Mid-South Conference, died Sunday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Funeral arrangements are not yet finalized.

Dowling played football for Georgetown College and was co-captain of the 1960 team. He also won the KAIC in shot put while competing for the school’s track team.

He coached at his alma mater from 1973-1976, then spent a seven year coaching stint at Liberty University, helping the program transition from from playing in the NAIA to NCAA Div. 2.
