Patroons Add Three to Roster
10/03/07 - Continental Basketball Association (CBA) Albany Patroons

Albany, NY (October 3, 2007) - The Albany Patroons have added three players to their 2007- 2008 roster. The Patroons welcome Byron Mouton, Damien Hubbard, and Herbert Jones.

Damien Hubbard is a 6'6", Forward and 2006 graduate of Liberty University. Hubbard began his college career at Frederick Community College where he earned first team All-Marlyand JUCO Athletic Confrence, All-Tournament in the Dunkin Donuts Tip-Off Tournament and the Maryland JUCO Men's Basketball Championship. He was then awarded a full scholarship to play basketball at Liberty University where he started every game and led the team with 5.6 rpg.

I remember the year when he had 5 Flames drafted off of the baseball team, but 3 basketball players playing for pay at 1 year AD (after Dunton) is pretty impressive, even if it's not at the NBA level.

Most AD's would be doing over having a coach who placed 3 players off the same team in any level of pro ball.

Interestingly, Hubbard is playing forward--rather than PG--for Albany. I wonder if his Albany coaches are seeing something in him that our previous staff did not.

Also, I wonder how many of Winthrop's players from last year are in the PROS now?

I thought all along that Hubbard could be a significant contributor for us as a 4. We were weak in the post, he was a gritty player and liked to get inside and bang. He wasn't a great shooter, and putting him at PG took his strengths away from him. As others have stated in other threads, RD always wanted a big PG. We had at worst the 2nd most talent in the league. With Blair, Brewington, Hubbard, McLean and Smith we had enough talent to be right with Winthrop and we proved it down in Rock Hill.

I'm sorry but Hubbard was not that great guys...let's be honest, if you played DI basketball and have a desire to play ball after school you'll find a gig, it's not any different than baseball and the players that go to the independent league to play ball (which I believe in basketball this team is similar in alot of areas including pay) All could play for "pay" if they wanted to...but guys we're talking about pennies to what they would make if they just went out and used their education.... congrats to him though, I'm not so sure he was a DI basketball player...he'd frustrate me to no ends when he wouldnt finish...I've never seen so many finger rolls and layups find a way to go everywhere but in

You said it before I could. If you played at our level, you can play somewhere afterwards if you want. Hubbard was maybe, at best, the 5th or 6th best player on our team last year.

I agree he was only the 5th or 6th best player on the team last year, but he was playing out of position. He wasn't a PG, not a SG, not really even a SF, he was a PF. He very rarely got to play there. If he would have he would have been a solid contributor. I believe he would have offered more than RP on offense. No offense to Rell, I really like him but he has no offensive game.

There have been many years actually that 3 players went on to play after graduation. It is really not that hard if you want to play for a small fee. HMO is right, most choose to start their lives with their degree in hand and make more money that way. I had a chance to go to Greenland. It was a no brainer not to go. I played on what they call some semi-pro teams where you get paid but not enough to do it for a career...I guess I am a semi-pro TV announcer by that definition . Anyway, I am glad Damien got a gig though. Congrats.

As OldFlame accuratley pointed out: D-Hubbard was a victim of RD's strange fascination with tall point guards.

That's probably why Dees left ..he was a soon-to-be point gaurd .
