I know LU is about chapel and athletics, but most of you probably went to classes, too.

Do any of you have any favorite professor stories (either best or worst professors)?

we had a thread started about this somewhere- maybe the old board. It included a link to an online survey somewhere where you could actually VOTE on this.

Hands down, my favorite had to be Homer Blass.

I never had him, but my roommate told me that on the 2nd day of class, he very slowly walked right into a wall. Now that's reason enough to sign up.

I had Rob Van Engen for GNED 102 this past semester. I completely dreaded the class and he actually made it enjoyable. This was his first year at LU. Some of the guys on here will know him because he stopped by our tailgate a few times. He's by far my favorite professor so far here in two semesters.

I also like all of the SMGT professors. While there may be little things I don't like about them, I really like all of them as a whole (haven't had Cohu in class yet, but from what little I've interacted with him, I like him).

Really my interesting professor story involves my ENGL 102 prof, Dr Prior. I was repeating the class and I had been told that she never signed anyone into her classes. Well I also heard she was very difficult so I thought Id try anyway. So I went by her office and made my request. After talking for about 10 minutes she signed me into the class because she said I remind her of her Cousin Eddie. To this day she still calls me cousin because of that meeting. Oh and I got passed the class too

I guess you could call me a sucker for punishment. Whenever I take professors that people say are really hard I end up doing really well.

We had a guy named Fred Haas back in the day in the COMS dept. He came from the University of Miami and returned there after a few years dealing with some of us knuckleheads. I learned a lot and his personallity was unintentionally funny. It made learning a blast.

i had Dr. Troy Matthews for GNED 101 and really liked him. he kept class interesting and that was the only class i didn't ever fall asleep in i think.
another one i liked was Dr. Cooksey from the psyc department. he was a really nice guy, and his class was easy.
a new prof this year is Dr. Doug Mann in the history department. i haven't had him, but i have talked to him and he is really cool. my friends have him and said he talks about sports all the time in his classes and has quiz ?'s about sports. if any of you have him.. his fav team is nc state

yup.

watched him stand in the corner (FACING IN, I might add) snickering quietly to himself, more times than I can count.

worth every penny of tuition.

Homer was my advisor back in 2003 when my major was history. He always would crack me up when he'd stand against the wall/blackboard and jab his lecturn up against his stomach to hold him up while he lectured.

Dr. Fink will still always be, by far, my favorite professor. The man has forgot more about the bible than I'll ever know.

He's awesome. He came by and talked to us tonight. He's a huge Michigan fan so I was ragging him pretty hard, then another kid from our class (who's a UF fan) came over and was doing the chomp. He's one of the professors that seems like more than just a teacher.

i think he was a former youth pastor at highland heights on 29

Right. He came here, got married after his freshman year so took a few years off so his wife could finish school, then he finished, then was a youth pastor for a while before going back to Michigan to start a church up there.

Well, I kinda made a certain professor cry.

He was trying to tell us that he would not allow his daughter to marry a Christian from a non-Christian family. In essence, he was arguing that Christians from non-Christian families could not possibly be a good marital match for those who are. This was first on his 'list' for his daughter, too, not like down a bit.

I couldn't help myself, and I raised my hand and asked rather directly, "Are you saying Christians from non-Christian families are not as good as those who are?" He just gaped at me. Then about half the class immediately raised their hands. There was a girl who I knew was on the debate team (beautiful black lady, but I don't remember her name), who stood up and basically started reciting Scripture on how that would not be God's view on the subject. She was brilliant. The prof very obviously got tears in his eyes, and then turned around to the board and started very loudly talking about the lesson.

I don't want to be mean - that's not who I am. And I hope that situation opened his (and maybe others') eyes that day. I come from a non-Christian family. I got saved in 1993 (this happened about 5 years later). I saw a lot of Christians from Christian families who were spoiled and basically just letting their parents live their spiritual lives for them, and this wasn't the first time I had seen people at LU snub someone who didn't have some sort of big family 'connection'. My best friend at LU, who is from one of those big name families, once told me "I like new Christians better. They actually care." She didn't mean that long-time Christians couldn't be, but she saw in her family how complacency was the rule more than devotion.

One of the saddest things I think I've ever heard was a girl who was in all sorts of leadership positions in the church, sang almost every week, and someone asked her what she did to keep burning spiritually, and she said "Well, my dad does that for me."

I like ishy's comments even though I'm kinda in the middle of the "Christian family measure." I'll share more sometime in with some other topics of discussion burning in my mind....
Dr. Fink counseled me when LU discontinued the Children's Ministry major; he told me to go with ELED or Nursing... to work around having a family. Maybe I should've gone w/ nursing instead of a general degree.

I had 2 faves during my time there. The art professor used a number of my album covers when he did a class focusing on album covers put out by Christian artists. My collection consisted of folks who did not get any air play what so ever on Xian radio at that time. He would poke fun at the covers put out by the LBC singers and such. My other fave would have been Gary Habermas....mainly for that philosophy class on C.S. Lewis that wwas offered during the 81-82 year. I still have my notes.

Favorite professor: Dr. Matheny....missions. Amazing man. Another one I adored, Dr. Kroll.....exceptional teacher. Dave Allison still around? his first year there as a teacher was my first year as a student. He was my advisor 'til I changed majors.
