JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- Trey Williams is a self-admitted hoops addict. From the purity of the high school game to the wild days of the American Basketball Association, the former Bristol Herald Courier reporter savors classic stories and free-spirited characters.

Williams recently took a circuitous trip down memory lane with a basketball legend. Working over an 18-month span, Williams chronicled the rocky life and unlikely career of Harley “Skeeter” Swift in a 238-page fastbreak titled “Skeeter: Harley Swift’s Buzzer-Beating, Trash-Talking March through Madness.”
And here is the mention of his Liberty connections ...
“And hearing how he cussed and chased referees into the stands while coaching at Liberty University, where many of his players’ fathers were preachers - that never gets old.”

Williams, who conducted dozens of interviews, chatted with basketball luminaries such as Clem Haskins, George Gervin and Steve “Snapper” Jones. He was also able to track down footage of a signature 30 point performance against the University of Richmond in his senior year.

Several passages in the book deal with racial injustice at schools such as the University of Kentucky and ETSU. There are also many tales that seem downright outlandish for the ultra conservative era and region.

“Skeeter had Elizabethton players running in their jock straps and he punched a Rogersville football coach on the day of the high school’s all-sports banquet,” Williams said. “I still can’t picture Skeeter and Jerry Falwell working together without smiling at Liberty University, and what a treat it would’ve been to ride around when Skeeter was talking 100 miles an hour and driving high school All-Americans everywhere from the middle of nowhere while putting Oak Hill Academy on the map.”
