A Sea Of Red

Looking for the early pioneering students and their families. I lived on Treasure Island my first year, 1972. I transferred from BJU, even as I was out of God's will for leaving BJ(that was what BJ told me). My dorm room was the red two story barn on the island. I think we had like 15 guys living there with one bathroom downstairs. I take it Treasue Island is no longer there.
I am proud to say I graduated with the founding class in 1975 and went back for my first visit
in 2005 for the homecoming game. I was overwhelmed to see what God has done and can only imagine what He will continue to do.

I stayed on the Island for about 2 weeks in summer of 73. I was a Junior transfer. It was so hot and muggy. I laid on my bed and sweated. I ended up moving to the Stewart Arms Hotel. Now that was some dorm. I was in a shoe box size room about 8 by 12. We had a 3 tier bunk bed. We ended up with just two of us for most of the semester because no one felt safe on the top third bunk. We had terrible roaches. I am not from the South and had never seen them before. The bulding was horribly infested. That is where I learned to always check the seat before sitting down in the bathroom. Current students certainly have no idea what we went through!

Hello, My name is Debbie Johnson. I lived on the Island Spring '73 and then move into the Hotel. I was the first student at LBC with a major disAbility. I graduated from the college in Dec '75, but walked in May '76. Then I was able to work for the college for 11 years. In the late 80's I had to "retire" for health reasons. In 1992 I finally finish my Master's at the Seminary. In 2000 I obtain a certificate to be a Paralegal. I have been active in the disAbility community and my church. In 2002 I had the wonderful opportunity of being Ms. Wheelchair Virginia.

I'm really anxious to hear more from our new LBC members about what God has done through Liberty.

I remember you Debbie. You may not know it but you were an inspiration to me durning my time at LBC. Let me explain. I was walking thru the LCA academy at the time and you were sitting on the stair well, cleaning the stairs and you would clean a section and then move down to the next step and clean it and so forth.
That touched me as I knew many preacher boys at the time who would not work but go to school full time as their wives held two jobs. I remember to myself that girl, you, had more fortitude then many of them . I have often wondered what happened to you, and now I know. I pray that God will continue to use and bless you. A lot of time life gets us down and we never know how God can simply use us in our every day life. All we have to do it be willing to go and do.
PS I worked full time and went to school full time and graduated within four years.

I didn't start LBC until Fall of '77, but my sister (Mickey) started in '75. Unfortunately, I think she's STILL stuck somewhere in the 70s or 80s and doesn't have a computer. Just thought I'd represent her on this particular thread.

My parents attended in 1974-1975. Their names, Phil STevens and Patricia Foster. My dad was actually a bus driver and my mom was the runner up to Ms. Liberty in 1975 (of course she was beautiful, still can't figure out why she married my dad). My dad always talked about how he and Falwell would play basketball late at night when he was a janitor at LCA. Always fun to hear their stories.

I was there from '73-'77.
Spent the first week at Treasure Island (actually slept my first night in a car because I was assigned to a condemned hotel called The Arlington up a block from the Stewart Arms that never opened as a dorm). After badgering they finally found me a dorm room in the Stewart Arms with 5 other guys.

Talk about lousy food. After hearing all the complaints Ed and Lorna Dobson came down one night to eat and the menu suddenly improved after that.

I remember having to wear a tie to walk a block down Church Street to the YWCA to play basketball. Then having to put the tie back on to walk the block back to the hotel. At night. We had some stupid rules.

A guy on our floor, Eddie Dodson, used to crack jokes about his trained cockroaches. A middle aged couple lived across the hall. She used to yodel. No lie. It was hilarious. She did some song about yodeling in heaven. (I hope not.)
