Leonard promotes two coaches

John I. Leonard Athletic Director Scott Siegel named varsity football and baseball coaches Wednesday afternoon.

Wayne Monroe is the new football coach, replacing Brian Coe, who was let go. Monroe has been an assistant coach for the Lancers for three years and was defensive coordinator last fall, when the team went 4-6.

Monroe was a four-year starter at defensive back for Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., where he grew up.

More than 60 candidates applied for the job.

"Wayne brings a lot of enthusiasm and motivation to the program," Siegel said.

Monroe wants to focus on special teams, conditioning and weight training and will likely hire a defensive coordinator to take over his previous duties. He said he expects to run a similar offense to last season, but with some subtle changes.
