The gathering place for LU alumni to wax nostalgic about their glory days and tell current students how easy they have it. Old hags & bright-eyed and bushytailed recent grads both welcome.

With all the talk about the atmosphere at sporting events (especially chants, etc.) I started thinking about my time at LU (86-89). I've mentioned the "We Want Blood" cheer on another thread (got strange looks, but nobody ever really fussed at us for using it), but there was another incident I was wondering if anybody remembered.

Opponent (can't even remember who it was -- I'm pretty sure it was in '87, I KNOW it was at City Stadium) had a RB named J. C. Penney. Every time the kid got the ball, we started chanting "K-MART!! K-MART!!" That Monday in chapel it was mentioned that we shouldn't do that again (but IIRC we did something similar the next game).

The only chant that I remember was in men's hoops when Gary Yoder would come in to mop up when we beating teams handily and everyone would yell Opie, Opie and he would just smile. Not sure where that came from but I think it had something to do with a TV show back in the day and Gary supposily resembled him.

I do remember a running back named JC Penney but not sure of the team. Probably Wofford. That chant must have started after I left. "Blair's Dogs" were a big deal back then but not that big. Didn't seem too vocal to me. Nothing like what they have right now with the LUnatics.

Football game atmosphere at City Stadium never really took off for many reasons. But there did tend to be some rather vociferous sections for which Iwill neither confirm nor deny my participation. :dance

I believe Wofford may have indeed been the team for which J.C. Penney played. I also remember us riding an RB for Central Connecticut State really hard and being scolded by Gary Aldridge in Chapel on the following Monday. But I can't remember the specifics ... :oldhag

For football the atmosphere improved under Morgan Hout it seems not due to performance on the field but because he seemed like he reached out to the students more than Tom Dowling. Dowling had some good teams and when they were winning the game day atmosphere improved but not like you think it would. The Morehead State wins were the exception as the game day atmosphere improved with those being homecoming. When I was there the JMU game in 84, the atmosphere was unbelievable the whole game. During my stay there that game really sticks out the most even though we lost. The Carson Newman win would be my runner up as we beat the #1 team in the NAIA.

A large group of us used to sit right behind the visiting bench at City stadium and ride bench players all game long, as well as certain cheerleaders. We actually had a player come into the stands one time to try and shut us up. A couple of cheerleaders did the same. Nothing ever happened, but it sure could have been ugly.

I wish I could remember what we said back in the olden days, 72-75 for either BB or FB games, but I cannot. Anyway the U of Miami had a football player also named J.C. Penny I know he returned kickoffs if I can remember correctly
If I remember correcty in football Ferrum JC was a big name opponent for us at that time.

The year the band went to New York to play at a Giants/Cowboys game (think it was my soph. year, which would have been '87), we were fired up at the game, and wanted to play every chance we got. Coach got mad at us and told us to be quiet (they couldn't hear on the sidelines, I guess), and we started chanting "Let's Get On The Bus!" Left right after the halftime show.

Hmmm. Chants and Morehead St. games. Yep, remember those for sure. Just saying.

Oh....and a lot of toilet paper being thrown around the stands. Only game that stands out and I went to all of them.
