The gathering place for LU alumni to wax nostalgic about their glory days and tell current students how easy they have it. Old hags & bright-eyed and bushytailed recent grads both welcome.

I was at the one in DC the year the Redskins beat the Dolphins in the Superbowl...in fact it was that weekend. The PTL club was taping there during that weekend and I have a few stories to tell, but I'll wait and see what others have to say.

I wasn't there in '83 for that Super Bowl victory by the 'Skins. But I was there in '88 when they beat the Broncos 42-10.

I was there with a couple of my best friends and we were staying in a really seedy place in a bad part of DC where most rooms were rented by the hour (Hey, we were broke college kids). Everytime the 'Skins scored a touchdown the parking lot would be filled with thugs firing their glocks and .38 Specials in the air in celebration. We were cowering in our rooms praying for the Broncos defense to step up before we died from stray bullets.

Seriously, I went several years in the Late '80s. The final time in '89 when I was VJing for a cheesy music video network startup that we were pitching at the convention. I have plenty of memories of those trips,

I was at the one in DC during the year when Oral Roberts said he was going to die if he did not get a certain amount of donations. I went to a session put on by his son. I remember a reporter from Petnhouse magazine standing up and questioning the son about his father's assertion. There did not seem to be a lot of sympathy from the other groups toward Oral's plea.

I was there that year as well. Richard Roberts had to hold a news conference to answer all of the uproar over the comments.

Bob Guccione Jr. was there at the same time and was debated live by Bob Larson (host of a national radio talk show back in the day).

I was there in like 88 or 89. Bob Larson had a set there and had Stryper on his show. We got bored and a group of us left and rode the Metro around for a couple of hours.

What was the name of that video outfit? Didn't Darry Goins VJ for them Too? Or am I just getting old?

No, Darry was focusing on his radio career that still has him on the air there in Roanoke today nearly two decades later. I just caught up with Darry a month or so ago after probably a decade or so.

The only other VJ you might remeber was Shirley Dragoo. Although Jan Berry was brought on to do music news updates.

Frankly I'd rather forget the whole ordeal that was the Alternative Rock Network. :guntohead

Knucklehead - Since you seem to remember some of my crew from back in that day, the two guys who were holed up in that cheap motel praying for our lives were Lec Coble & Greg Lontkowski.

I do remember Shirley Dragoo, and Greg Lontkowski, however vaguely. What ever happened to Brad Vanley?

Brad married Elaine Lucadano and he was doing sports at a small market in Florida last I heard. Elaine has had a tremendous career as a reporter and correspondent.

I seem to recall a Saturday Night sketch based on that. I think it was Phil Hartman playing Jesus. He walks into Oral's office and the secretary asks if he has an appointment. He goes into Oral's office and says, "It's time Oral...it's time".

Back in 83 when I was there, 4 of us shared a room in Alexandria at a Ramada Inn and we drove into DC for the meetings at the Sheraton. We had fun times going out for pizza with Pickering. I know she's suffering now and in a lot of pain...but one of my most   :jawdropper memories was riding in an elevator with Tammy Faye with no make up (her...not me) and no hair (again, her...not me). From what I saw, it was hardly ever her real hair...always wigs.
I was also abnle to witness those famous tears go on and off at the drop of a dime....or whenever the floormanager said one of the cameras had a glitch and they needed to retape. The best thing to me about that whole PTL thing there that weekend was the fact that Bebe and Cece Winans were part of the PTL singers and both of them have a set of pipes. That entire Winans family can sing their heads off.

I was there the year Ronald Reagan spoke. He had protesters in the audience that got the crap knocked out of them by the ushers. It was great! That's pretty much all I saw. We stayed at George Mason U with some friends and kinda blew the whole convention off. oops!

I was there in 1986 as a student and went again on my own in 1990. In 90 I met a guy named Robin Rees. He runs a small Christian TV Channel in England. Over the years we have become close friends and I have visited him several times in England and him visiting me out here in New Mexico and when we lived in South Carolina. I did however meet Jim Baker and Jimmy Swaggert a year before their fall. Those guys were all show at the height of their popularity. I will say this, is that there sure were some chracters there. I met the program Director of the Rock Church TV Network at the time and he was very interesting to say the least. Sly Fox I believe you were there in 86 also. I know I kept running into DR. Haas the whole time I was there and he kept asking my opinion on the convention.

Slyfox, I ran Camera for Lynchburg Cablevision at some of the LU Basketball games with Elaine Lucadano. Her success does not surprise me she was a go getter and hard worker.
