Divorce Update

I have been a little busy and haven't been here in about a month, but I wanted to give you guys an update on my present situation. I would definitely welcome all the prayers, advice and help that you guys can offer.

I met with an attorney a week ago Friday and have been desperately trying to come up with the retainer fee she is asking for. I was very impressed with her and would like very much to hire her. She said that she could work a payment arrangement out once I had paid her the retainer. One of my Uncle's has sent me $500, but I still need $2000 in order to have the full retainer. I have to file an answer by Thursday and right now it doesn't look like it is going to happen. A court date has been set for February 8th and he is suing me on the grounds of mental cruelty for full custody, child support, alimony, absolution of marital debt, and his legal fees.

I have tried everything I know to do to come up with the retainer and it is simply not happening. I have tried other attorneys and have found that her retainer is half of what the others have asked for. I have contacted Legal Aid and although I have qualified for government assistance I "make too much money" for them. I tried to apply for a small loan when I opened a checking account and was denied. I even asked my church if there was anything that they could do to help. I love my daughter and can't imagine life without her.

Have you checked to see if their are any women programs in your area to help with aid? I used Chrysalis during my divorce and paid a sliding scale fee. I think my retainer was about $1500 and I got divorced 12 years ago so you may already be paying the sliding fee. I am praying!

I have another appointment with an attorney today at 4:00. He told me to come in and we could talk about the situation and see "what we can work out". I am not sure what that means, but at least I have a foot in the door. I also got a call back from another attorney who said he could talk a $750 retainer. This will still be difficult to come up with, but at least it is better than 2-5 grand. I will continue to keep you guys posted. Your prayers are felt and appreciated!!!

I am not sure where you live but I do know that there a several attorneys who counsel for a mediation. I don't know the particulars of your situation but it is basically a flat fee to have someone come in look at both complaints/complaintants and make a decision (Think a more equitable form of Salary arbitration) That usually costs a lot less.
