Bill Keller calls out Jonathon Falwell & others

Excerpts from Bill Keller's "Daily Devotional"
Loving the things of this world more than the things of God. In the
aftermath of Mitt Romney's big speech this past Thursday that was billed as
a defense of his Mormon beliefs, I was shocked and deeply saddened as I
watched one Christian leader after another being interviewed. As a follower
of Jesus Christ, the Jesus Christ of the Bible, I thought that the most
important thing was to share the message of Christ's love with the lost and
help to bring them to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, knowing that
those who rejected Him would die and their souls would be damned for all
eternity to hell. For a Believer, especially those who have taken on the
enormous responsibility of being in a leadership position, how can anything
be more important than the eternal souls of men?
What absolutely sickened me was the aftermath of the speech and the comments
by Christian men who have large followings and are looked up to as leaders.
Ralph Reed who the networks failed to mention is actively supporting Romney,
praised and lauded his speech. James Dobson of Focus on the Family who has
a business relationship with the Mormons called Romney's speech "Passionate
and his message was inspirational." Richard Land, president of the Southern
Baptist Convention said, "I thought it was a remarkable speech, it was an
eloquent speech."
Albert Mohler at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville has not
endorsed Romney, but says he finds him an "attractive candidate." Mohler
says evangelicals who say they won't vote for a Mormon may reconsider.
Reverend Rob Schenk, president of the National Ministry Centre in Washington
DC who attended the speech, called it "One of the best political speeches on
this subject that will likely ever be made. As an evangelical, I think he
went a long way toward relieving some of the anxieties that evangelicals
have." Jonathan Falwell who appeared that night on Hannity and Colmes on
FOX News should have been on "Dancing with the Stars." Rather than use this
opportunity to share why Mormonism is a cult and their teachings totally
inconsistent with Biblical Christianity, he decided being politically
correct was better than taking a stand for the Truth

I'm not saying that I like much of anything about Mitt Romney, but it's safe to say that after reading that I like Bill Keller even less.

I had a long thing written out...but it was just a rant....in summary, I can't stand when people do this...like Jerry Falwell would say often...we are looking for a good leader for this country, not a pastor...

I do not support Romney at all, but none of the reasons have anything to do with the fact that he is a mormon. This guy was talking to somebody here in the statation and he said to another guy, "Do you really want a mormon running this country?"...me having the big mouth that I have asked, "what in the world does that have to do with what makes a good president?"...he studdered for a bit and said, well.....i don't know...i mean there other reasons...but come on a morman...

I then said that is the stupidist thing I have ever heard and I don't even like Romney....

wow, this has turned into a rant again...I will shut up

The problem with Keller and his ilk is that they focus on the wrong points and ultimately harm their own cause while damaging their own credibility.
The heart of the king is in the hand of the Lord.
As a point of discussion, how many effective US presidents have been believers?
While I do not support Romney, I think he would be a far better choice for president than anyone on the dem side and a few on the republican side.

Who's Bill Keller? That is how much I care about his opinion. Honestly, never heard of him and don't care if I do now.

Unfortunately, he's an LU alum with a talk show (and a HUGE ego). See: http://www.liveprayer.com/

Here's how I feel about it...
“We live in times of great uncertainty when men of faith must stand up for American values and traditions before they are washed away in a sea of fear and relativism. I have never been one who is particularly comfortable talking about my faith in the political arena, and I find the pandering that typically occurs in the election season to be distasteful.

“Our nation was founded to be a place where religion is freely practiced and differences are tolerated and respected. I come to my faith through Jesus Christ and have accepted him as my personal savior. At the same time, I have worked tirelessly to defend and restore individual rights and religious freedom for all Americans.

“The recent attacks and insinuations, both direct and subtle, that Gov. Romney may be less fit to serve as president of our United States because of his faith fly in the face of everything America stands for. Gov. Romney should be judged fairly, on his record and his character, not on the church he attends.”
Not my words, but I couldn't possibly have said it any better.

hellfire & brimstone preacher, appears to be fundamentally sound, obnoxious in-your-face style, interesting personal testimony

Oh, one of those kind, not interested. I was hoping LU would not turn out that kind any more, but I know a few have fallen through the cracks. The good news is, there is fewer of them everyday. You see a lot of the old fundies loosen up a little, become more evangelical, but for some reason you don't see the reverse. Might say something.

Bill Keller's an LU alum? No way!

That being said, his "Reason for God" book is quite good.

Are you scared of a little "hellfire & brimstone"?

This guy sounds like a real tool bag. Get over yourself. God is going to appoint a president and if that happens to be a pro life mormon over a pro choice new yorker, so be it.

See, I thought that the presidency was determined by butterfly ballots, hanging chads and all manner of lawyers. I didn't realize we were breaking out the Urim and Thummim here.
