I sensed mental calculators throughout the room working overtime, adding up the total cost of my crazy scheme – approximately $4,000. Why should we give church members money? The church board response was less than enthusiastic but, taking a leap of faith (backed by my personal guarantee to make up any money lost), they reluctantly granted approval.

I've heard of this being done in other churches before, actually. I don't think the amount was even so high as $10 when I'd heard of it previously. I'm thinking it was in the $1-5 range. Even so, if it gets people thinking about how they're using the resources they've been given, I'm all for it. Too many of God's people are squandering way too much of His resources.
