I'm sorry but it's extremely typical of this school to talk crap about Pentecostals and Pentecostal beliefs. I've heard it from students, professors, and even campus pastors while I was here. I don't berate Baptists (or people with Baptist beliefs) for what they believe and I have the opinion that I shouldn't be berated or made fun of for the stuff I believe. It was obvious that JMUdukes was making fun of Pentecostals and their belief system. I have no respect whatsoever for people that do that.
i think there is a BIG difference in making fun/berating then to say that some of the things pentecostals believe is not something that alot of baptists find biblically sound. see: speaking in tongues.

feel free to yell at me. just sayin....

Ok I was raised COGIC (Church of God In Christ) which is pentecostal. I still consider myself a Pentecostal and have no problem with laying on of hands or speaking in tongues as a prayer language (those are the only two things I can remember off the top of my head). I have spent the last 7 1/2 years in Baptist churches. I will say that I have had some interesting experiences (heck Ive had some even while I have been in teh choir at TRBC) and I will say that I think there is a level of respect that should be wrought for all the different denomination. Remember, God didnt die just for Baptists, Methodists, Episcopalians, Catholics, Pentecostals or whoever...he died for all mankind. I remember I think Dr Falwell saying that he was asked if a good Buddhist is going to hell and he responded that a good Baptist is going to hell without Jesus.

Now We all have our unique aspects of our worship. I find laying on of hands to be worship just as much as singing songs out of a hymnal. If deaf people are signing to music is that any less worship? I tend to be very expressive in worship (due to my Pentecostal background). I am often asked by my section leader in the choir to calm down. I just love worshipping the God who saved me.

That's my $.02

Super, what did you expect from a traditional Baptist school? Why didn't you go to Oral Roberts? Just wondering.
I knew stuff like this would come up. It's why my grandfather (a minister) didn't want me to come here and it's why my aunt (an ordained minister) won't let her daughter come here.

You asked why I didn't go to Oral Roberts? The simple answer is because I was led to Liberty, not Oral Roberts. It's as simple as that.

i think its great you worship the way you worship....I understand everyone worships in their own way. however i also understand your section leader asking you to calm down when in front of others worshipping, as it could be distracting to how other people chose to worship.

speaking in tongues being biblical is a COMLPETELY different topic that i am not sure is even worth going back and forth on. I personally do not think it is biblical in this day and age, but that is MY belief. i wont "make fun of you" for yours, but i will say i dont think its biblical.

That's exactly what your dad said in class and exactly why I wanted to punch him in the face. In the name of Jesus of course. (That was a joke.) However, it was the only time I'd ever wanted to get up and walk out of class.

dont see the relevenace in pointing out that your grandpa or aunt are ministers or ordained ministers, but i think you prove a good point in saying that they dont want their kids grandkids or whatever to come here, they are doing the same thing you accuse baptists of doing to penecostals. there will always be people who dont agree with you on something, but if they ONLY cared about the work of the lord, it wouldnt matter where you went to school. Baptist or not.

I am cool with the theological discussion but I am not very comfortable with the direction this headed with regard to family members. Let's try and keep it on topic without the personal aspects if at all possible.

didn't think so.

The reason they don't want them coming here is because of the openness of accepting different denominations and differing opinions. My grandfather who is a Pentecostal preacher is accepting of those who are Baptist, Methodists, Lutheran, etc and understands why they believe the way they do. He disagrees with them. He doesn't force their viewpoint on them. The reason they were apprehensive about me coming here (or my cousin) is because of the need to force everyone under the Baptist umbrella. I'm one of those, "Hey, we all agree Jesus is the way to Heaven. You worship your way, I'll do it mine. As long as we agree on the basics I'm fine with you" people.

I added the joke part because I know sometimes sarcasm isn't picked up online. That was my fault for not adding it on the beginning.

gotcha, my apologies....

i understand what your saying about "forcing" people under the baptist umbrella, but i dont necessarily agree. I dont think i have ever heard it said that you HAD to worship as a baptist here. I actually know of certain instances where people were most definitely allowed to worship however they wanted, so long as it wasn't right in front of the stage to distract other people.

it was a sincere apology, clearly joking or not i dont like to hear someone say they wanted to punch my dad in the face and walk out of his class, but it is what it is. i still believe speaking in tongues is NOT biblical, and he still believes it is. he can believe what he wishes..and i am sorry for jumping on it if it was in fact a joke.

but yeah, i had to swallow my pride for that apology. haha.

I just had no idea we can threaten people jokingly, to a family member! (not to mention the previous comments a while ago about him that would put that whole joking comment into question) that takes balls joking or not so I give him credit for that...I guess I should be happy, this opens up raciest jokes, tragedy jokes and all sorts of things as long as you follow it up with (of course I'm joking)

And yet some how he got crazy offended when someone was joking about a picture...I could only imagine if it was something to do with his parents or something....the wrath that would have ensued

Personally I really don't care what someone's denomation beliefs are. They will only get you to the grave, it is your belief in Christ that will get you beyond the grave. This is coming from a kid raised in IFBX church where the pastor preached if other people did not dot their I's and cross their T's like us, they were backslidden. Then I spent a year at BJU and saw The Old Time Gospel Hour after my freshman year during the summer and I came to LBC and met Jerry Falwell and his way of presenting the Gospel. He was tolerant of people but steadfast on the doctrine of Christ.
I personally don't believe in speaking in tongues today like they did on the day of Pentecost or sprinkling for me. If other people want to do so, that is his or her business. If someone spoke in tongues around me I would watch or listen and that would be about it, no problem. Now if they told me I was not saved as some penecostals told me years ago or that I was not a spiritual christian, then there would be an issue.

Before I got to Liberty, I was Baptist. I thank Giant Omnipresent Dude every day that I met jerks like you people who made me realize I didn't have to be.
First off, JMUDukes just said he's not Baptist, but both you and SJ assumed that he was from his comment. So it's okay to make fun of/stereotype/disparage Baptists, but no one else? And I think it's funny when someone lets other people determine what they believe. Kinda like Ghandi saying it was Christians who prevented him from believing in Christ. I'm sure that's not working out too well for him now.
no, I'm not Baptist, but every doctrine argument I've ever had with a Pentecostal has turned negative, so that's my viewpoint.
