One trooper is dead and another remains hospitalized after a shootout last night in the Poconos that killed the suspect, an armed man who fled with his 9-year-old son from Nazareth to Monroe County.

Trooper Joshua D. Miller, 34, died of his injuries last night, while Trooper Robert Lombardo, 35, remains hospitalized in satisfactory condition at Community Medical Center-Scranton.

The incident started last night around 7:45 p.m. in Nazareth when police received a report of a 31-year-old man with a gun violating a protection from abuse order. The man, Daniel Autenrieth, 31, of Palmer Township, grabbed his son and fled. Nazareth police spotted the man's vehicle and began a pursuit that ended about 40 miles and 50 minutes later on Route 611 in Coolbaugh Township, about a quarter mile north of Route 423 near the village of Tobyhanna.

The shootout was the culmination of a marriage in tatters and an ugly custody battle between Autenrieth and his wife, Susan.

The news release said Autenrieth's vehicle was stopped using police intervention and "upon approach of the vehicle, gunfire was exchanged between the police and the actor." Autenrieth was pronounced dead at the scene, his son was not injured.

Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim said Miller died from a single gunshot wound and ruled the manner of death is homicide.

Yeah, praying for all of the families involved. The one the officers were going out to assist sounds like they could use some prayer too. So sad.

That's just awful

I have a question PA...is that normal language for this type of write up?

"satisfactory condition"

I've never heard of this, is this like stable condition? I know it's off topic and I'm not trying to be funny but it just seemed odd then I saw "marriage in tatters" and I was really confused.
