LU students have a hand in writing a version of the Bible


Glenn Housden writes out the verse Numbers 6:12 for the Bible Across America tour, which made a stop at Liberty University on Tuesday. To mark the 30th anniversary of the New International Version Bible, the Bible will be handwritten, verse by verse from start to finish, during a 90-city tour in 44 states.

The first Bible was handwritten.

And now there will be another, only this Bible will be written “one verse, one person” at a time.

Tuesday afternoon, hundreds of Liberty University students lined up to contribute.

To mark the 30th anniversary of the New International Version Bible, the Bible will be handwritten, verse by verse from start to finish, during a 90-city tour in 44 states. The handwritten version will be called America’s New International Version.

It will take 31,173 people to copy all the verses in their own handwriting. So far, the project has attracted more than 2,000 participants.

Hmmm... I'd be wary letting some students contribute to that NIV bible... I remember some kids taking the "KJV or else its of the devil" stance.

It's okay, all those that wrote in the "Zondervan NIV Book of Death" will have their names removed from the "Lambs Book of Life".

If they had listened and stuck with the KJV, they wouldn't have fallen for this trap.

I can see it now. Some church youth group of 14-year old girls will write out the entire Book of Revelations in pink glitter ink and dot all the "i"s dotted with stars and replace all the "o"s with little hearts.

Maybe the university can use this for part of the writing assessment core competency.

I remember watching some Josh McDowell video in high school where he was talking about how meticulous the Jews were when copying the Old Testament. They would only look at one word at a time and write that down. At the end, they'd count up how many times each letter was used and match it, count up how many words were used, and match it, and see what the middle word was. If they had three typographical errors -- for an entire book of the Bible, they would have to start all over again.

And then I see this... it seems so... I dunno, what's a step or two below 'sacrilegious'?

okay maybe i didnt read it correctly...but the way i read the article, i thought the only thing different was that it is handwritten? i mean its not like each person gets to translate the way they want to, they only get to write it...right?

Yeah, it's not a "new translation"... it's still the NIV. Just handwritten. I was joking with my post.

Yeah, I think the idea is actually pretty sweet. However I dont think it well sell many more copies than the people who have a verse written in it.
