[Hold My Own]

I just wanted to get a general idea of what civic groups everyone on here is involved in. I'm looking to get into maybe some sort of breakfast group or something where you can give back but as well as be surrounded by businessmen where I can hopefully learn as well.


I'm interested in hearing everyone's involvement no matter where you are but with some of you I'm unsure of you're location so maybe you will need to say if you're a local or not.

and it doesnt have to be a civic group maybe even just a group that meets in the AM or PM for a small group gathering

Not at all...sleep is the cousin of death...so I just try to stay active...I'm single, young and with the time...I remember back when my grandfather was on about 20 different boards and groups being able to help out as many people as he was really changed his outlook on things...I want to take advantage of the time I have now rather then try and fit it into a wife and kids and work

Back to HMO's original question. Right now I am not a member but I have spoken as a guest at a slew over the years. I from that perspective I can see great advantages to the investment of time.

Mrs. Sly is bigtime into Junior League. So she overcompensates for my lack of participation.

Right now I'm just in the Lynchburg Sports Club...it's pretty sweet having some really good speakers and stuff

I opened up a tanning salon...nothing serious....I'm 24 (well will be saturday) and just trying to get started and learn all i can

I started my business in '86 as a soph. @ LU- and I'm still at it. In the burg, connections/networking is very important, though I suck at it and have never been much of a social mover. Other friends in business have talked up joining the Rotary Club as a great way to get to know other businessmen. The Chamber is also a great way to network if you actively pursue the networking side of it as opposed to the social-party aspect of it. Volunteer organizations are also great groups that foster relationships while allowing one to get involved in giving back to the locality.

we have takked about this before HMO, but join as many as you can. a good networking tool as well as you can learn a lot and it's just good to be civic minded.

2. valley forward- young professionals group designed to keep young people in the roanoke valley through economic development

Where is your business located?

It's located up at LU's campus north. I've heard good things about the Rotary Club in other cities although I think ours here in Lynchburg is struggling a little bit. I dont think there's any doubt I'll do the Chamber, I really like the idea of it.

I really wish Lynchburg had a group like the Valley Forward group...that's something that would be a lot of fun and there's no doubt that LU would be a great part of most discussions.

i'm involved with the Young Republicans of Chester County, Chester County Right to Life, the Sadsbury Township Zoning board, The Sadsbury Township election board and also the Coatesville Tax Payers alliance.

Lynchburg does have a great young professionals group that would be worth a look. Check the link for some info or Google it.

nah...it's where i live and since im gonna be here for awhile i feel like i need to be involved and help make this city better. im not exactly a young professional, but im young in regards to many here in the noke that are involved.
