Forty years after retiring from the Army, Charles “Chuck” Hendrix can still fit into his uniform.

On Thursday, he still hadn’t decided whether he would wear his military garb or a black cap and gown with a red sash this weekend.

“Most people are kind of surprised I’m doing this because I’m 83 years old,” said Hendrix, a grandfather of four.

Today, he and his wife, Ellouise, will pack up their Buick Century and drive to Lynchburg, Va. They’ll make the 277-mile drive to Liberty University, where Hendrix will earn his General Bible Diploma on Saturday.

“It’ll be tiring and busy, but we’ll enjoy it,” said Ellouise, 80.

About 4,800 graduates will attend Liberty’s commencement this weekend. Hendrix is among 36 who are graduating from the Liberty Home Bible Institute.

I actually think I saw him walking down Main Street in TRBC--in a WWII era uniform--just before Baccalaureate on Friday night.

He's actually slightly younger than my grandfather who lives off Old Graves Mill Road. I can only aspire to be as productive as they are at their age.
