I saw BJ from a distance on crutches tonight standing with the LUantics in the Vines. What happened to BJ? I hope he didn't fall into one of those holes they dug for lights at Worthington Stadium.

and he pretty much just walks regular and moves the crutches while he walks...not saying that to be mean I'm just confused by the actual purpose of the crutches

So, to track BJ's injury:

Friday he was on one crutch.

Friday night he was playing Dance Dance Revolution at the arcade thing on campus.

Saturday he shows up at the basketball game with no crutches.

Saturday he disappears before halftime of the basketball game, only to arrive after halftime with two crutches.

thanks for the indepth info on your injuries bee jay......it's a freakin roll call man!!! not an injury report
Sounds like Smooth is sending mixed messages: first he doesn't want an injury report, but now he does. Okay, BJ, what gives with the crutches? You were waving them in the air last night like a flag.

Ok, I was hoping not to have to post about all this publicly, but since there is a lot going around, here is the deal:

About two and a half years ago I was in karate class doing some movement drills. I lost my balance while trying to change direction and my weight ended up on my right knee and I felt something "pop". I went to Light Medical the next day and Dr Lane said its probably a torn meniscus and to be careful. He said if it wasnt better in two weeks to come back and see him. So about two and a half weeks later (I had a setback while I was with the band in Allentown), I had to hustle to karate class because I overslept. I came to a grassy hill that was still kinda wet from the night before and tried to walk down it. I took my first step and my left foot slipped out. While that was happening, my right foot stuck in a muddy area and so all my weight went backwards and I bent my knee so far, that I literally sat on my right ankle. I got up and I knew something bad had happened. Unfortunately the soonest I could see the doctor was the following Monday. After a few appointments over the course of the week, I was scheduled for knee surgery that Friday morning to repair my meniscus (which they figured I had retorn in the second fall). They discovered while they were working on my meniscus that I had partially torn my ACL. They couldnt go in and fix it then so they closed it up and told my doctor (Dr. Hopkins, who I was referred to by Dr. Lane). At that time Dr. Hopkins told me I was eventually going to need surgery but that I could manage even with the partial tear.

I use the crutches from time to time when the pain in my knee gets to be unbearable and I need some support while I walk. To help with the pain all I really have is Ibuprofen. I took a couple extra on that night that I was playing DDR so that I did not have to worry about the pain because DDR had become a favorite game of mine. Of course I woke up the next morning in even MORE pain, so that was not a very good idea. Sometimes I go on one crutch instead of two because I still want to be able to take care of some basic things myself (like getting food in the dining hall, going to basketball games, working at the radio station, etc.) It probably has not been a very good idea to walk on it but, Im also extremely stubborn, much like my dad. He hurt his knee when I was in middle school and he continued to do his rounds, even while walking around with the assistance of crutches, much like I have been doing now.

Sometimes I go without, but that is mostly because when I go around on the crutches, people ask what happened, I tell them and they feel sorry for me and so I figure I am going to be tough and get around without them.

I understand exactly what BJ is going through......

I tore my ACL at LaHAye 3 years ago playing basketball; however, I have never had surgery and the pain starts killing me in the winter.....I sometimes get this pain underneath my kneecap in such a way I almost limp, so I try to take it very easy on those days (however, never use crutches).....

BJ, working out will help your knee......get online and look up stretches for your knees and begin working with them....

Since initially tearing my ACL, I didn't learn my lesson and took out my MCL too. I understand that there is some discomfort and pain, but you need to workout your knees so the problems wont get any worse. So what the eff you waiting for??

I'll talk to the folks at Lahaye about it. Maybe I can get some exercises to help as well.

I tore my acl back in the 80's when the prognosis with surgery wasn't very good so I didn't have the surgery. The ortho had me do some exercises which basically amounted to leg extensions that strengthened the large muscle just above the knee and keeps the knee straight thereby compensates for the torn acl. As long as I keep up with the exercises, it works relatively well but I had to put my NBA aspirations on hold.

I'd bet the crutches are a great way to get some sympathy for the lady crowd, however. Just make up some story about the knee injury.

The question remains, where did you get the crutches during the game?

I had left them at the top of the stands because I wanted to try to tough the game out. I had to run back to the radio station and take care of something at halftime so I grabbed them from there. the ibuprofen I had taken earlier had worn off and the pain was getting to me so I used them when I went back to the LUnatics section. Course my knee was really killing me after the game because I wanted to stay up like the rest of the gang even while I was on crutches.

So let me get this straight:

Your knee hurts, so instead of planning ahead and putting extra ibuprofen in your pocket, you climb a huge flight of stairs, walk across campus, then back down the stairs, stand up for 45 minutes, then climb those same stairs again? Yea, that makes a ton of sense.

BJ, just carry a small first aid kit (at all times) with lots of pain killers.

Im just glad to see that it is more straining on the legs and such to stand with the LUnatics than it is to play Dance Dance Revolution...

wow...you guys are hard on poor BJ...

lets keep in mind that DDR is with painkillers, standing with LUnatics is without (climbing stairs and walking across campus not withstanding)

Beej...I'm not going to lie, it did cause us some questions when we were talking to you at the baseball game and then the next thing we know HF, Scar, and others saw you going down the steep hill with both crutch's in one hand in the air while running down the hill!
