Midnight 5k run a success
by Benjamin Lesley, Contributing writer
The Midnight 5k run was a big hit on Saturday when an estimated one hundred and forty liberty students came out for the big race, blowing away last year’s previous record of 30 runners.
The event was sponsored by Higher One and organized by the Student Government Association. The event was free to compete, and the first 60 runners to sign up received a free tee shirt.

The first place male and female winners each received a $30 gift card to Riverside Runners. There was also a $30 gift card to Wal-Mart given away to the runner with the craziest costume.

First place runner Jason Brown came across the finish line with a time of 18:45 and was followed shortly by second place winner Ryan Peak with a time of 19:07. Brown was sitting in his dorm room at 11:30 p.m. when his roommate came in the door and asked him if he was going to run.

“I just came out here for fun,” Brown replied shortly after crossing the finish line. Lauren Reed came in first place for the women with an impressive time of 21:00, and was followed by Stephanie Place with a time of 23:38.

Anthony Petriccione and David Kephart were voted “craziest dressed” when they showed up at the race dressed as Siamese twins. The young men fit both of their bodies into an extra-large pair of pants, wore dark, wiry “geek” glasses, and a Big ‘n’ Tall Harlem Globetrotters jacket to complete the look.

When asked why, Petriccione said, “We did this to represent brothers in Christ, bonded together, persevering to the end.” The two finished the race together in last place for a time of 45:47.

Overall, this years 5k run was a huge success. When asked what she liked most about running, Savannah Moore commented, “Because I love people, and I love to run.” From the most competitive to the craziest dressed, most seemed to enjoy the early morning race.

I'll run to the fridge occasionally, or maybe to the bathroom after eating Mexican but that's about it.
