Man dies after crashing into Liberty University building

A Saturday night accident ended fatally for a man whose vehicle ran off the road at Liberty University’s Williams Stadium.

Lynch Station’s James R. Dowdy, 61, died after being transported to Lynchburg General Hospital.

According to Sgt. Wes Erickson, with the Liberty University Police Department, Lynchburg emergency dispatchers reported the accident just before 8 p.m.

Interesting. Prayers for the man's family.

Now that we have "substantial" damage to the building, why not just tear it down and rebuild a new one that can support seats on top of it.

i looked for a hole in the fence and didn't see anything, but i did see one of the poles that holds it is down. so i assume the fence just flipped up when he took out the pole. I couldn't see the building, but am thinking about going and getting some pics so everyone can see the damage.

Before any of you folks get big ideas...it is not just the "visitors locker room down there." The fieldhouse houses the wrestling locker rooms and practice facility, as well as the athletic training room which the wrestling, men's soccer, and all the track teams utilize.

theres a crack up the wall near the top above the hole too. i guess the dorm 7 repair crew will get some more work

i would love to see that building gone, but i just don't think its going to happen right now. i hope i'm wrong though. maybe this is a sign that its time to finish this building off and put up something new that can have seats on top

I was thinking the same thing. When someone told me they hit the locker room, I was thinking they came down from where the guard shack used to be and came across traffic coming onto campus.

That sucks.

And it's kinda sad that the first thing out of our mouths is talking about building improvements when a dude passed away.

Yeah this took place during the game when "those" around me found out...when I was told I had to have them explain it to me 3 times b/c it was so bizarre

A sad story- condolences to the victim's family. Hoping no staff or students were in the building at the time- something to consider is adding barriers to prevent vehicular access to buildings (or at least those in close proximity to the street).

And yet another reason to have paramedics on campus.

yeah- that was my point- the buildings that ARE should have some sort of barrier at the ground floor level. This was likely a freak accident, but it may not always be in the future.

in most metro areas, you can't get a vehicle near buildings that have high occupancy rates (think DeMoss, Reber-Thomas)

the rot used to have a guard rail by it but i think its gone now that they renovated it

strategically placed concrete poles are the norm, and RELATIVELY aesthetically pleasing- though Jersey barriers are common as well.

According to Monday's paper, the man died of natural causes not related to the accident, and he never applied his brakes.

Three of my friends were walking back from the gym and saw it happen, he practically almost hit them when he went off the road. They ran down to check on him, and my one friend took his pulse as soon as they got to him and he was already dead. They are very shaken up about it so please add these three girls to your prayers of this situation.
