Liberty University may sell The Plaza to a “reputable developer” who has made an offer on the property, Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. said Friday.

“We’re leaning in that direction,” he said. “I think the likelihood is strong but you never know until those deals close.”

Jerry, Jr gave some great reasons in the faculty meeting on Monday for this.

its pretty far away from campus, so i don't think the location is that good although the DLP thing did seem like a good idea. if JJ thinks its a good idea to sell I'll trust him b/c he knows what he's doing. I'd say if we sell we're making a lot of money off it. It'd be great to buy RR, but its still to early for that

I say we buy everything in a 10 mile radius.

Ha.....no construction here...and no teasing either...but let's be honest if LU wants to get to the level they want to RR Mall is vital so it's just a matter of time...

as far as it being to early to tell...it is...until they break ground on that mall...then watch the stores start to squirm at RR Mall (they've already begun)

Why don't they just move DLP over to the former church?
Falwell previously had looked into the possibility of locating the school’s Distance Learning Program offices to The Plaza.
With this new development, he said, the school may instead consider purchasing portions of the old Thomas Road Baptist Church for offices that don’t need to be on the main campus.

Thats an option...although as far as space and Sq ft available you cant beat the Plaza...I'm interested to see how many people are going to be using the old TRBC, from what I hear it's going to be leased to several churches in the area (maybe for offices?)

Wasn't it donated? That would mean no matter what it sells for, they make a profit.

An Exciting Possibility for The Plaza

Lynchburg News & Advance
February 12, 2008

There is welcome news that Liberty University may be ready to sell The Plaza. Such a sale could be a huge boost to the city’s economic development. Restoration of the shopping center, a destination for shoppers in the 1960s and 1970s, would not only breathe new life into the city’s Midtown district, it would also have a beneficial effect on the city’s tax base.

Five months ago, The Plaza’s owners donated the 42-acre shopping center to the university. LU Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. said last week the school may sell the property - valued by the city at $11.7 million - to a “reputable developer” who has made an offer for it.

“We’re leaning in that direction,” Falwell said. “I think the likelihood is strong, but you never know until those deals close.” The closing process could take 90 days after a draft contract is signed.

I think somebody needs to do all parties involved a favor and just torch it. I'm sure LU's got it insured and then we can just build a parking lot or something. That place will never be developed into anything worth while. And it's not because it's old. It's because of the area around it.

hopefully this developer is a visionary. there is much they could do to make it a destination in lynchburg, and it would be great for the revitalization of a once proud part of lynchburg.
