Medic, so you won't be in the dark, it's about LUPD's latest purchase--a Dodge Charger police car.

i saw this group a while ago..

I think its dumb that they bought 2 new chargers. Some of the old cars are horrible, and they did need something to replace them. but for the money they spent on those they could've bought 4 used ones that were in decent shape. LUPD doesn't need chargers anyway, the fastest they ever go is like 35 on campus and thats in an all out emergency. they should've spent the money on an ambulance or something like that

That's so dumb. You open your mouth and just let whatever's inside fall right out, don't you?
  • First of all, if my last visit to LU indicated anything, it's that LUPD will be driving these new cars until their wheels -- quite literally -- fall off.
Second, LUPD's job description is not solely chasing speeders down University Blvd. They escort a fair number of VIP's and other work in the public eye; work that entails driving something slightly better than a re-painted rusted-out hoopty-mobile.
Thirdly, -- and this will be Medic's favorite part -- who's going to drive said ambulance which, incidentally, costs significantly more than two brand-new Dodge Chargers? The paramedic team? Oh, right.
Lastly, what the holy frap do a bunch of unemployed college kids care about what kind of cars the police department drives? LUPD has their own budget, I'm sure, and they spent their money on what they wanted to spend it on.
Now, go clean off your Birkenstock's and go get a job. Freakin' hippie.

Maybe they got a good deal on them so it wouldnt be costing more than a lame duck car.

Personally, if theyre worried about how they look, get a Compass

must agree with Mr. Fire here.

Guys- for just a second, suspend your 18-24 yr old disbelief/cynicism and consider the fact that the LUPD may just be a bit better able to determine what level of equipment they need to do their job.

First off- police vehicles are normally set up for a specific purpose. Most patrol units are sedan type vehicles, such as your Crown Vic, Charger or Impala. Most departments favor the rear-wheel drive Vics or Chargers for size/weight, handling, stability and straight speed, as well as the ability to transport an individual(s). On rare occasion, SUVs such as Tahoes or Expeditions may be modified for use as a highway/pursuit vehicle.

Here's the thing- you don't just wander down to Crazy Eddie's Bargain Corral to git yerself a good deal with these things. 1st- there is too much liability to be purchasing used equipment, be it a fire truck, ambulance, or police car. This aint a 94 Sub-ey w/ low miles that you can use to go from Taco Bell to grandmas house and back twice a week. It has to go from zero to balls-out, 24/7, in -5 deg or 105 deg. So "NEW" is the way we roll.

Most importantly- municipalities buy these off "State Bid", meaning- the price is set, by the State, and the manufacturers supply the vehicles at THAT price to any muni with the ability to purchase on that bid (requires a govt ID number). Incidently, Fire Depts and EMS organizations use the same process to purchase ambulance chassis. Point being: the price is the price- and its lower than you'd think- as hundreds or thousands of these things are being purchased. Sometimes the Fords are cheaper, sometimes the Chevys or Dodges- but it often comes down to preference.

Moral of the story: study hard, get good grades, and let the cops do their thankless jobs without being micromanaged by Erik and Coose from Beta Delta Xi house. [/rant]

I cannot speak for the Chargers but at one time the nicest LUPD cars (some crown vic's) were given to the University....so never doubt anything when it comes to LU and how much people are willing to do for the school....I can promise you they didnt drop $40k on these suckers

Even if it was $40K who cares. The boys in blue need reliable wheels. Cop cars are cheep compared to fire dept rigs...try around 1.2 mil for a new rig my dept is getting in March. (that's why those coppers can afford the doughnuts! )

I visited campus yesterday and saw these boys stopped effectively where the old guard shack was located. My first thought was "WOW, those don't look like what they had when I attended." My second thought was "GOOD!!!"

I don't care what the price tag was. Honestly I love them simply in terms of image. The university has made many image improvements over the last 3-5 years and if you're going to upgrade your police vehicles, why not get some tough looking cars to compliment the rest of the image on campus. I'm a fan of the cars.
