As part of an ongoing lecture series, Peakland Baptist Church is welcoming Dr. Tony Campolo to speak in Lynchburg next weekend.

Campolo, author of 29 books and professor emeritus of sociology at Eastern University, will focus on Micah 6:8, “What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”

Pator Steve McNeely of Peakland Baptist said besides being an “excellent speaker,” Campolo was chosen as the 2006 Vagt Lecutrer because of his book “Revolution and Renewal: How Churches are Saving Our Cities,” a testimony and analysis of churches working for redemptive change in Camden, N.J.

“(The book) talks about how people of faith can work together for their communities,” McNeely said.

The goals of the lecture series, which is in its fourth year, are to turn attention to unmet needs in the city; to learn from the stories of churches that have effectively worked to bring hope to their communities; and to build bridges among local congregations.

The community will have three opportunities to hear Campolo speak. There will be a breakfast meeting at the Holiday Inn Select in downtown Lynchburg at 9 a.m. April 29 where he will give a call to “Do Justice.” At 7:30 p.m. April 29, Campolo will give a call to “Love Kindness” at Lynchburg College’s Snidow Chapel. And at 11 a.m. April 30, he will give a call to “Walk Humbly with Our God” at Peakland Baptist, located at 4018 Peakland Place in Lynchburg.

“(Campolo) is known to be a dynamic speaker,” McNeely said, and his popularity is evident in that 170 of the 180 tickets have been sold for next Saturday’s breakfast. McNeely said as of Friday, the church was still taking orders for tickets.

The breakfast meeting is $8, and tickets can be obtained by calling Peakland Baptist at (434) 384-2031. The other two events are free and open to the public.

Campolo is a frequent guest on TV shows ranging from “Larry King Live” to “Politically Incorrect.” He is the founder of the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education, an organization that develops schools and social programs in various third world countries and in cities across North America.

Would love to go hear him talk. He is pretty liberal, especially for this part of the world, but have read about all his books and love to hear him speak. Not sure I can do the 9 am thing b/c of work, but will try and take 1/2 day.

Well lets see, he is bald, sweats when he speaks, and also spits a lot when he speaks (NO not Danny Lovett w/out the hair piece) He is big with Compassion International. VERY liberal, but not in a way like my good friend Mel White. More on theology then lifestyle. Here are some of his book:

20 Hot Potatoes Christians Are Afraid to Touch
Adventures in Missing the Point: How the Culture-Controlled Church Neutered the Gospel
Can Mainline Denominations Make a Comeback?
Carpe Diem
Following Jesus Without Embarrassing God
How to Be Pentecostal Without Speaking in Tongues (one of my personal favs)
How to Rescue the Earth Without Worshiping Nature
The Kingdom of God is a Party
The Power Delusion (AWESOME)
Who Switched the Price Tags? (Probably what you would recognize him most for, this vid made all the youth groups in the mid 80's)

Hope that helps! Here is his web site with a pic and everything!! http://www.tonycampolo.org/

OK so I am posting to myself. BUT if anyone is interested the Tony Campolo Breakfast is sold out but they are going to put some extra chairs out if anyone wants to come. This guy will really make you think. For those that complain about the "selfish" attitude of LU students, this is the guy to listen too. I went to a private college and everytime he came to speak he shook the joint up.......for the better. I garunteeee you will not agree with a lot of what he says, although I find myself more in agreement then not, he does not take the same line as Falwell on a lot of issues, but man he is NOT a waste of time.

MY SUGGESTION: Take your date to the presentation on Saturday night and then to Five Guys and you have yourself a cheap date. You appear spiritual, always a plus, and you frugal, a requirment, and leave filled spiritually and physically ( a great excuse to sleep in on Sunday!) Hope to see some of you there!

Wait, who the heck are you and where did you go to college? I always figured you for an LUer. Although I suppose LU is a private college... Is there more than meets the eye (transformers) to Brokeback? PS Shouldn't you be in Wyoming? not Montana.
