As part of an ongoing lecture series, Peakland Baptist Church is welcoming Dr. Tony Campolo to speak in Lynchburg next weekend.
Campolo, author of 29 books and professor emeritus of sociology at Eastern University, will focus on Micah 6:8, “What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”
Pator Steve McNeely of Peakland Baptist said besides being an “excellent speaker,” Campolo was chosen as the 2006 Vagt Lecutrer because of his book “Revolution and Renewal: How Churches are Saving Our Cities,” a testimony and analysis of churches working for redemptive change in Camden, N.J.
“(The book) talks about how people of faith can work together for their communities,” McNeely said.
The goals of the lecture series, which is in its fourth year, are to turn attention to unmet needs in the city; to learn from the stories of churches that have effectively worked to bring hope to their communities; and to build bridges among local congregations.
The community will have three opportunities to hear Campolo speak. There will be a breakfast meeting at the Holiday Inn Select in downtown Lynchburg at 9 a.m. April 29 where he will give a call to “Do Justice.” At 7:30 p.m. April 29, Campolo will give a call to “Love Kindness” at Lynchburg College’s Snidow Chapel. And at 11 a.m. April 30, he will give a call to “Walk Humbly with Our God” at Peakland Baptist, located at 4018 Peakland Place in Lynchburg.
“(Campolo) is known to be a dynamic speaker,” McNeely said, and his popularity is evident in that 170 of the 180 tickets have been sold for next Saturday’s breakfast. McNeely said as of Friday, the church was still taking orders for tickets.
The breakfast meeting is $8, and tickets can be obtained by calling Peakland Baptist at (434) 384-2031. The other two events are free and open to the public.
Campolo is a frequent guest on TV shows ranging from “Larry King Live” to “Politically Incorrect.” He is the founder of the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education, an organization that develops schools and social programs in various third world countries and in cities across North America.
