I would love to make more trips back to the 'Burg but its tough for me to justify the airfare. But if I could find whizbang specials I might be able to get Fox clan back more often.

So I am curious to hear suggestions on low cost carriers, booking tricks or anything else that you use to go travel to and from the region. I'm good with regional airports like Greensboro, Raleigh and Richmond. But I admit DC is pushing it.

What do you suggest?

Your best bet is either Raliegh or Greensboro, I'd imagine. Both are reasonable distance from Lynchburg and are easy drives. Another option may be Norfolk. It may be a tad more expensive than the previous places you mentioned.

Don't know if they come your way or not, but Allegiant Air, AirTran and now Sky Bus are where we are finding the best deals. Sky Bus is really something in terms of $$, I know a couple of LU kids that have already booked their spring break flights, but they may not come your way. Their "hub" is Greensboro I think. Read the fine print about luggage, etc. Allegiant flies into Roanoke, not a bad drive at all. Air Tran to Richmond, a little further.

Well Sly if you fly into Roanoke you can hook up with bigsmooth. As far as carriers, I really cant say with any definitiveness the best ones to look at.

Dulles is about 3 hours, but you don't have to deal with Beltway traffic.

Southwest flies into Norfolk and Balltimore. I think Contintental flies from Houston to Norfolk. Norfolk might be worth checking on. Its 180-190 miles from Norfolk to Lynchburg. No Interstate but you can take 460 almost all the way.

Southwest into Raleigh is the best way to go.

We are doing a Skybus from Richmond to Columbus Ohio to go see IU play Michigan St at Assembly Hall in Bloomington In. We will rent a car and drive 3 hours to the game. I believe our flights were around $35.

Allegiant only serves McAllen & Laredo in Texas. AirTran & SkyBus don't show up in most Travelocity or OPrbitz search engines so those are great.

I'd rather not drive all the way from Tidewater. Reagan National is a beast with traffic but Dulles is a possibility for me.

We flew into Raleigh on USAirways (Excuse me while I hurl thinking about that experience) when we came for Homecoming.

Skybus also flies from the Rio Grande Valley to Orlando as well. But neither destination does us any good.

Screw Lynchburg. Go enjoy Orlando! I just came back to the Va Beach area from Orlando, holy crap, I want Florida back. It's like -2897589734895bajillion degrees here and I was wearing shorts and flipflops in Orlando.

No, no, no! We call it "climate change" now! Didn't you get the memo from the left? If we call it global warming we can't blame it cold weather and blizzards. Climate change, on the other hand, can handle all weather phenomena. It's more scarier.

Yeah, US Airways sucks...delays every time I've flown with them. As mentioned, Southwest flies into Raleigh and Norfolk. AirTran does have a hub in Richmond.

I avoid Southwest's herding as much as possible but it may be the best option right now. These low cost carriers don't seem to want to come into Southwest backyard to take on the beast. As a result Southwest doesn't offer as many super cheap fares as they used to a few years ago.

when my parents were in tx and i was in lburg i used to fly southwest out of raleigh to either san antonio or austin round trip for like $160...straight shot! i am not sure about other parts of tx, but it seems the deals would be comparable.

I generally fly Southwest out of Hobby which is the carriers main hub. While I miss living in Austin I don't miss the dinky airport. Most times RT airfare these days to either RDU or Reagan National is in that price range. But when you have a family of five you're looking to go even cheaper.
