I'm sure that many (if not most) of you already got to experience this moving piece during Christmas Convocation. For those who aren't local or may have missed it, I think that it's important for everyone to understand the compassion for the impoverished that's being displayed by the university these days.

We truly are a campus of compassion.

I can't remember what it was called, but I saw a facebook group that some students had started angry about this video and how the leaders of out university shouldn't make light of a serious situation.....I was tempted to join just to tell them how stupid they are...then decided it wasn't worth it...

I actually hadn't seen the video yet, just heard about it....good stuff

Just watched it. I'm severely disappointed.

This is the exact opposite of what we should be doing as a "Christian" university.

Not everything is "on limits" just to get a laugh. This video would have been fine without the first 60 seconds addressing legit social issues. We just used the fact that people are starving to get a laugh at Christmas Convo? Insane.

That was a good chuckle.... people are really dying of poverty and we look like fools for this.

Lighten up. Take the stick out of your butt and realize we're not a school that is politically correct. Get over it.

SJ...

It's not "Political Correctness" here... it's having some respect for people who will die for not having food in their stomachs.

You also seem to be more concerned with getting a chuckle than promoting Christ. You don't know what Political Correctness is.

We're not politically correct when it comes to Abortion, Gay Marriage, etc. The reason is that we believe the bible says something about these issues and we won't back down.

Please show me where the bible says we're to make fun of poverty and people dying... people living without shelter.... Please show me where this is Liberty University's new stand on homelessness or poverty? You're nuts to think so. This is a case where the administration participated in a distasteful video. It was supposed to be funny but it wasn't... it was insulting.

I'm glad a bunch of 18-22 year olds got a laugh... but did LU take up a poverty offering and address this as a real issue... or was it just a chance to get some humor in spite of the poor among us.

Matthew 25:40-46
40"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

41"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.'

44"They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?'

45"He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'

46"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

You have nothing to offer a conversation about morality SJ. Grow up and do something with your life before you go around running your mouth. Get out and actually build a church or feed the poor or help people who are abused or find kids foster care before you run your mouth about "people like me".

Those of us who have gone out into the real world know that videos like this only give people ammunition who look at us as being selfish and arrogant. When we make videos using the poor as our punchline we've gone too far.

Trut is SJ... you don't have a moral compass when it comes to these things. You're still talking like your 15 years old. Maybe as you mature you'll encounter poverty and understand that it's not a laughing matter. Maybe to kids who can afford college it's funny to laugh at the poor. To those of us who live and serve in the community... it's not funny. As an Alum it's insulting and disappointing. I can only imagine what the Mainstream Media would do with this video to discredit everything Dr. Falwell built.

Enjoy the quick laugh and wise cracks. You're not on my radar. Get a job, help the poor and then come talk.

The fact that you say that stuff about me, not knowing anything about me, is flat out hilarious. Get a job? I've got one. How many other kids do you know that are licensed Real Estate Appraisers in two states at the age of 21?

No moral compass? Just because I'm not a complete tightwad and can't laugh at things doesn't mean I don't know what's morally right and wrong. The fact of the matter is our school helps with people that aren't as lucky as us more than any school in the country. We're allowed to make parodies on this stuff. The fact that the powers that be at our school found it light hearted enough to be a part of the video show that we can laugh at things and don't have the personalities of a brick wall.

How do I have nothing to add to a conversation about morality? I've never drank. I've never smoked. I've never done any of the things that are considered "morally wrong" to the church. You're just a complete tight wad on everything and have absolutely no sense of humor about anything, ever.

TallyW, I knew that someone was going to say something like this as soon as I posted this video, but I really didn't think it would be you. This video was poking fun of the housing situations on campus this year, and nothing more. It was simply a parody of something we've all seen before. The poor were not the punchline of this joke. The students of Dorm 7 were the punchline.

You've made me so angry by saying this that I can barely type right now. YOU are the one who's embarrassing to me. People like you seriously make me question continuing to fund FlameFans.com.

Jr, Godwin, Johnnie Moore, Billingsley, and a few others are in front of a black screen talking about how we needed to help the poor. For the first 30-45 seconds you think it's a legit video about starving kids in Africa, but then it's obvious they're talking about helping poor kids on the circle. They say that they're living in shelters that are falling apart, not knowing where their next meal will come from, etc. They talk about how for the cost of (insert long drawn out coffee name here) you could help a kid.

SJ- You're right. I don't know you. You don't know me. What we mainly know of each other is online here. On the FlameFans.com site I haven't shown my sense of humor... and you haven't shown your morality? Fair? I'm okay with that.

You basically made my point for me. LU does give a lot. That's why we shouldn't use poverty as a punchline.

As for humor, it sucks that you aren't around me. I'm actually a very relaxed and fun person. I've stated before that I don't have time to post here like a lot of people... so when I actually chime in it tends to be on something I disagree with. There are plenty of times I laugh at what's said on the board and move on.... If you think people need to write "LOL" in a post to show you that they have a sense of humor... good luck with that. When I speak up about an issue I'm not looking for a fight. I'm a member of the board just like you are. I have every right to express my opinion and position. If you want to call names and show your rear end... that's up to you.

As for appraisals, I know plenty of people at 21 doing well. I was one. My point with the job is that you're still in school and defending your position based on the eyes of a student. When you get into the real world and give a crap about society you'll soon realize that making fun of poverty isn't funny. As a college student you don't think that far ahead. You are thinking about yourself and why you can't afford to go to the GMU game.... you're hardly meeting with city leaders about solving homelessness in your community. My point is until you do get out and begin to deal with homelessness and poverty, you have no clue why someone wouldn't think it's funny.

Jesus doens't think its funny and you can try to group me in with the fundamentals but at some point you'll have to take a sober look at it and ask if you're part of the probelm or the solution. This video is distasteful. As I said in my inital post, the video (in my opinion) would have been fine without the first 60 seconds. The part that is offensive is the serious start to the video where our University leaders add credibility to the issue. Then by turning around and making fun of poverty to get a laugh... it's distasteful.

As for morality... I'm not talking about drinking and smoking. Why do people believe that's the standard of morality? Neither of those even concern me actually. I'm talking about a life that takes into consideration what Jesus would want from his disciples. I think Jesus had a great sense of humor. I don't think he'd make the poor the target of humor. Poverty is not funny.

To give perspective.... The Dorm 7 float was funny to me. Why? It solely focused on an LU issue. It was "us" making fun of "us". When we spend 1/3 of the video highlighting serious poverty statistics... then we spend 2/3 of the video making fun.... it's not funny. Again, if the first 1/3 were cut... and it was just a video about how the Dorm 7 guys are homeless and the circle looks like a junkyard... that'd be fine to me. A Christian University should not tie in global poverty to get a laugh.

No. They're standing there talking about it comparing it to coffee. At one point in time Johnnie Moore could barely keep from laughing.

While we're on the topic, I'm boycotting ABC right now because of that horrible show they have on Sunday nights. Maybe you guys have heard of it? It's called 'America's Funniest Home Videos' or something.
Honestly, they show all those clips of people falling down, taking toddler punches to the groin, humiliating themselves and, in some cases, getting physically injured and we're expected to just laugh at them. That's real pain and suffering right there and to have it exploited on a glorified game show just makes me sick. Getting sucker-punched in the gonads by a four year-old is no laughing matter.

That's just dumb. Just because I'm not meeting with city officials I'm not looking down the road? You've never once had a conversation with me about anything other than here. I have things planned more than 90% of the people in college. I may not be meeting with city leaders about homelessness, but I'm meeting with school officials about things that I have a passion about and how I can change those things for the future for when I'm gone. Is homelessness and athletics on the same plain? Not even close. However, you're making a complete a** out of yourself when you say that because I'm in college, I'm not looking to the future.

The thing is Tally, almost every week in convo they are telling students ways they can give back...its not like this college is a place that could care less about people...that is not true...but you also have to be able to laugh at yourself...and this was just that...a way for the college to laugh a little bit about some things that went wrong this year with housing...

The only people that are upset about this (which are very few) are people that tend to be a bit uptight....I am not talking about the most moral people...but the people that think they have the answers to every problem in the world...

Tally you are way off base on this one....

WOW... SJ can curse! Way to go big guy. You win... you can call names and curse on a message board.

SJ, I'm pointing out why this video would not be funny to some people and downright insulting to what they have a passion about.

Last I checked I simply posted my disappointment. You came at me.

Why do you have a hard time allowing for others to speak differently than you on an issue? Since you came at me, I began addressing you.

Thank you for acknowledging what you care about isn't the same as homelessness. Again you prove my point. People who care about poverty find this insulting, offensive and counterproductive for the cause of Christ. Some people actually think that we should take a position which does our best to have a great time while not shooting our University in the foot. Thid video accomplished NOTHING but some humor for about 2 minutes of life. What it does for people who already don't know Christ however is continue to build up their notion of Christians being full of it.

By me getting jumped on this fast in this thread should say a lot as well. So now we have a mentality around here that doesn't accept differing opinions about serious social issues? Sweet. Glad to know that was the direction this board is headed.
