I usually leave about 20 percent. I leave more if I am by myself or the service is exceptional. Even if the service is bad I usually leave a decent tip though. I guess I just feel weird leaving nothing, even though it is sometimes deserved.

Honestly I used to just stick to 15% until I started hearing horror stories from non-LU people about being stiffed on Sundays after church (or by people they knew were LU people during the week). Since then I've tipped probably way more than I should almost every time I've eaten out, simply trying to counter that perception. It may or may not work, but I never want to be part of the reason LU and it's associates get a bad reputation around town.

Although last night our waiter had a jerk beside us who kept talking about how he's "a business owner" and I felt bad for the guy so I bumped it up a little....you cant pay someone enough to wait on idiots

15 or 20%. unfortunately a lot of the time it's not even the service that weighs on my tip, but rather the attitude of the server. if he or she is innocent and good, then great tip. arrogant, bad tip. average-joe (or joyce), 15ish%. bad service, bad tip.

Do you guys grandparents tip well? I think its a generational thing, because the older people are, it seems to me, the less they tip. I don't think they understand these people are paid below minimum wage.

Forget grandparents. My parents don't even tip well. Well, my dad doesn't. I've had to go back into restaurants man times "to use the bathroom" (and leave more tip) when I've gone out to eat with him.

Unless the service is really crappy, its always at least 20% for me. Having worked as a server, I definitely tip well.

Pretty much anywhere from 15-25% depending on service level. Keeping my drink filled is the most important thing. Also, making sure the appetizer comes out before the meal. I can't stand it when they bring out the appetizer then 2 minutes later the meal is there. It's like, why did I even order this? I'd say I'm usually a 20% tipper but there have been a few rare instances where I left little or no tip (Ham's in Lynchburg comes to mind). If the server is rude and doesn't do a good job at all, then they don't deserve the tip, IMO.

i do the same thing. i normally just do 20% in my head and round up.
only exception is if the service is really bad, like at vinny's today. refilled once the whole meal and had to wait 15 minutes for the bill. then they get whatever i feel like, which today was $1. (my bill was less than 10)

i used to do this but have now since bumped it up to 20%. i then usually round up.

I usually try to tip around 15%, but my wife's uncle used to really embarrass us, because when he felt like he got bad service, he would always leave a PENNY to make a statement. Looking back on it, I think the old guy was just cheap or had unrealistic expectations, because he left more pennies than he did a decent tip.

When I was in college and working as a cook at the Chattanooga Choo Choo, I remember a waiter got fired when he went up to a customer who left a 25 cent tip and said, "here, I think you dropped your quarter."

Having worked as a server for 3 years prior to my "grown up" job, try making 2.15 an hour, and then getting taxes taken out of 2.15 an hour. your literally making LESS than **** and all so people like you can go out to eat and be waited on without having to lift a finger other than to raise your fork or glass. Don't be such a penny pincher, and don't tip because you feel "obligated" tip because its how some people are making a living, and without them you couldn't be lazy...you'd have to cook and clean up your own food.

ALWAYS tip....you have no idea what that waiter/waitress has been through before you got there. Perhaps they received some bad news before work that affected their service....or maybe they are just having a bad night. One good tip could help to change a person's attitude. If you can't afford to tip or you're too cheap to leave a descent tip...don't go out to eat. Oh, & if you order adult beverages...tip more than usual, because the waiter has to split with the bartender.

Either that or just build the freaking cost into the menu items and pay the waiters a normal wage like every other business in this country. Believe me, I am not going out so that I can be lazy. I'm going out because I like the food that these places make. Maybe I should tip the chefs too?

tipping the chef is unecessary, as is tipping your taco bell girl, as they make NORMAL hourly wages. (actually chefs make anywhere from 12-20 an hour!) I'm just saying, we can't control the pay. We didn't ask for a normal hourly wage to be 2.15 an hour, help us out. We pay our bills pay people appreciating what we are doing for them.

I go with at least 20%, sometimes as much as 33% if I'm feeling generous or it was really great service or a cheap tab. These people work hard and, especially in Lynchburg, they don't get nearly as much in tips as they should. I try to do my part to balance things out a little.

I hate to order water, especially in this town, as it gives the inmpression that I'm going to be cheap with my tip. I actually order water sometimes so I can give that drink money to the server.
