For those into music: My Brother in law (an LU Sophomore) is the drummer for a new band here in Lynchburg. Currently they have cut 4 or 5 songs they have written for a Demo CD. They play a lot at my church (Heritage Baptist) and are doing a monthly Open Worship/Coffeehouse there. The next one is Friday the 19th at 9pm. Check out 2 of there songs and a video at http://myspace.com/intheredmusic
They describe themselves as pop punk!

Music was good, but 20 seconds into the vocals I had to cut it off.

Thus the term demo. Recorded at a small studio in Rustburg. They soung much better live. The guy sings a lot too.

Not sure how experienced they are, but here's a general rule of thumb when recording or putting out a demo: Whatever the first song that plays is, make sure it's one of the songs in which your vocals are strongest. People (like i just did) will cut it off without giving it a chance if 20 seconds into the first song, they can't stand the vocals.

I guess I'm just a little close to the Forest to be objective, but ever heard of the Cranberries? I like her voice!

This music thing is what I do. It's what I love. I'd give up all the sports stuff to start playing again.

No, believe me, that's good for you to be there. Every band, especially starting out, need people that absolutely love them even if other people don't. That's fine.

Also, the beauty of music is that you can like something that I hate, but it still be good. I can like things that you hate, but it still be good. Different types of music hit different people, well, differently.

OK can we delete this thread completely please? I'd rather them get no pub than 1 or 2 "experts" blasting them and giving them bad press.

What music do you play?

I actually listened to both songs on the site (b/c I'm not a 20-second snob like some people) and I agree with the vocals comments pretty much. Cranberries chick had a much more dynamic voice. This girl is monotone, a little nasal and in serious need of a high-pass filter. Other than that, it didn't completely suck which is about as good a compliment as I can give. I would like to hear something else from them to see if they have any kind of range. If they came out with something else, I'd at least like to listen to it so there's some good publicity for you right there.

Come to the coffeehouse. They don't really do their stuff there yet. They do FireFlight, David Crowder, Third Day, Barlow Girls, etc. It is a church praise and worship thing, so that is what they do. It is really good.

By the way, thanks for actually listening before slamming them.

Yeah, that would require an eight-hour drive and a special dispensation from the wife. Ain't gonna happen.

Were they happy with what they got there? I haven't listened yet because I'm in a meeting (ha!) and I can't right now, but I will later. My experiences with TRZ have been that few people leave there happy. Just curious.

OK for their current budget. Not many other options round here. They are mostly happy. The vocals are one of the issues. I assure you she sounds MUCH better live.

Dude, I didn't just criticize. I gave suggestions as to make it better at the same time. If it's a young band, there are things that they don't know that you only learn from being around it. I also didn't "blast" them. I said the music was good, I didn't like the vocals. It's something that a band just starting has to deal with. If you advertise a band, there is going to be criticism. I tried to give suggestions instead of just saying, "They suck." That's called constructive criticism. If a band cannot listen to constructive criticism, go through it and pick out the stuff that would work, and then make the necessary changes, then they will go nowhere fast.

The Terrordrome has freshly returned from the wilds of Frusenland.

That happens a lot, especially with lower-quality recording equipment. As they play more, and as they get a bigger budget, they'll be able to fix that in the studio, even on the demos.
