There is a lot that can be done with this. It seems that they've groomed the trails (perhaps the very ones that Horton's been cutting for years now?)

Now LU can sport a club Mountain Biking Team if there is a contingent of MTB'ers on campus (I'm willing to bet that there is some good talent going largely untapped for lack of opportunity or being unaware of the opportunity.) The Club page shows that a Scott Curlee is the contact for a cycling team but no dedicated webpage that I could find. (I'm curious if it is just road or also MTB.) I'd even be willing to part with a few bucks to help them get it going. If those trails are really nice, they could even host some events.

Also, the Xterra off-road Triathalon Series (think Ironman for Mountain Biking/Trail Running and swimming for the uninitiated) runs a regional qualifying race out of Richmond...With this new LMTS setup, it seems like an LU club team could also sponsor an off-road triathalon for the public and/or other collegiate club teams themselves to raise money for the operating/travel expenses for their club team. (Also, I think an LU team could come up with a better uniform scheme than UVA...no offense Cider, Smooth and One&Only.) 8)

I knew a couple of guys who would have jumped at this chance back when I was in school. In fact, last I heard about one of the guys was that he was teaching at a local christian school and worked at one of the local bike shops, although I'm not sure if he and his wife are still in town. But I would be willing to bet there is a decent amount of students who would be up for a MTB team if they knew about it. When I was in school, I knew of collegiate club flag football, but I was largely unaware just how extensive the collegiate club scene really is (from soccer, rowing, sailing, cycling-road and MTB, boxing, rugby, etc.)

General Info about Collegiate Cycling (from the W&M site):
...[Cycling] is a club sport. In the United States there is no varsity cycling organization, so the best collegiate cyclists in the nation compete through club teams. Competition is overseen by the National Collegiate Cycling Association, sanctioned by the United States Cycling Federation. William and Mary Cycling competes in Division II of the Atlantic Coast Collegiate Cycling Conference.

Mountain bike racing season occurs during the fall months. As winter takes hold cyclocross races are held, and the coming of spring brings road racing season. All races are divided into categories based on skill level. Men racers are divided into A, B, C, and D categories, while women racers are divided into categories A and B.

Non-Sequitur: Although VMI doesn't appear to have cycling, their club sports team webpages are nicely grouped. They do have boxing...that would be cool to see at LU...LU Fight Night. I like it.

Wow, Pete. I'm thinking this is a thread about cycling on the mountain and all of sudden its about boxing.

Club sports usually develop from a core group of folks with a similar interest banding together to make something happen. I agree that the infrastructure is in place to have a cycling club. In fact, I would've seriously been down with that when I was in school.

As for boxing, this is a bit of a sore subject on campus from what I can ascertain. There have been those who have run unauthorized training camps with sparring on campus and its left a bitter taste in some mouths. Its frustrating because there is no gym I'm aware of in the Lynchburg area to train. Unless that can be remedied you are just talking about some guys beating the tar out of each other in the dorms and that is a liability nightmare. Yeah, I did some dorm boxing back in the day and it was a blast. But a club would require legitimate training or it would be a waste of everyone's time.

Perhaps an off campus event sponsored by an organization could provide an outlet for boxing since I'll bet there are a number of former amateur boxers on campus ... along with plenty of other athletes who think they can fight.
