So I'm sitting in a class of about 150 people (biology) and it hasn't started yet. Outside they're testing the warning sirens and all of that. It was on the splash page to disregard these, they were just tests, etc.
There are 5-6 conversations (that I can hear) going on about "some weird noises and sirens outside."
Read the friggin splash page. It's there for a reason.

Can't hear a thing in CN.

The sirens are only one component of the alert system they're working on, I believe. They're mainly for the benefit of MC and the dorms.

It's also going to be a weather warning and all of that to.
Go ahead Postman and tell me it's not just Liberty students, etc.

It'll come in handy the next time they cancel classes for 1/16" of snow.

This just in on faculty email:
Dear Faculty and Staff,
Following today's Convocation, Liberty University tested its new emergency siren system. In the event of a real emergency, specific instructions would be given following the siren.
I responded to it to find out how CN people will be notified.

We got a call saying that it wasn't a drill. Darn pranksters.

Students got the same e-mail.
Knuckle, one of the reasons you may have gotten a call was that one of the "tests" they ran said that it wasn't a test.

Germans? Who was your history professor?
The attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan on December 7, 1941 brought the United States into World War II.

Ahhhh, Cider.....my fellow NC BBQ lover..... I feel I must bring you into the light of the internet world involving catch phrases.
My phrase is actually from the movie Animal House, "NOTHING IS OVER UNTIL WE DECIDE IT IS! WAS IT OVER WHEN THE GERMANS BOMBED PEARL HARBOR? HECK NO!"
Search for phrases like "LEET", "All your base are belong to us", "We've landed on the moon", & "The Germans have bombed Pearl Harbor". You'll get a nice laugh.

Some of us good LU boys never saw Animal House.

I don't want to speak too soon, but I believe an SMS notification system is also being implemented as part of the overall alert system. That should take care of most people not within earshot of the sirens. Similar systems are being implemented (or have been implemented already) at other universities with great success. In fact, I just saw a story this week where there was a stabbing at a school (University of Colorado, I believe) on the first day of classes. Everyone who had signed up for the SMS system was notified immediately of what was going on, where it happened and that the suspect was already in custody.

Maybe because
Animal House has an R rating? Also, I was a memeber of several IFB churches from 1977-1997, who really didn't approve of movies, especially the R-rated ones. So, I've got 20 years of catch up for all the movies I've missed over the span of 2 decades. I just saw the first
Star Wars movie this summer.
My apologies, blwall: I'm just not as well versed in movies as I am in literature.

Actually, I never saw the movie either. No joke. Not because I have anything against it...I just haven't seen it. But, I do know a lot of catch phrases & their origins.
How dare you subject your mind to obvious witchcraft & satanism of the
Star Wars story?

I bite my thumb at you!

so LU did a test that involved them calling people to say it wasnt a test? what kind of test is taht??

Shuk, once again, you have no clue.
Liberty's page said (I'm paraphrasing), "Hey, we're doing some tests. We're gonna run a few different things. Disregard what they say." They ran the real things, and people who didn't read the announcement may have thought it was real.

No. LU tested sirens. Someone else called some folks at LU to tell them the sirens weren't a test. In other words, they played what some people would call a "prank".

You have to forgive those "literary types". When someone writes "sirens" their minds immediate think of...
