Apparantly National Geographic thinks Lynchburg is one of the best small towns in the country. How about that.

http://www.newsadvance.com/servlet/Sate ... 0686&path=
National Geographic Adventure magazine has rated Lynchburg as one of the best small towns in the country in its list of Top 50 Adventure Towns.

The magazine's September issue names the country's best places to live, play and seek adventure.

Adventure is a loose term. We've had two "adventures" in the Fort Hill area in the last week. See below...

There was a retaliation "adventure" on Saturday night. Fun fun fun.

You clearly haven't been to Mudpuppy's on a night where the Hillcats are on the "prowl." Quite entertaining. And when those two guys started throwing chairs at each other because of a disagreement over the predicted record for the 2006 Dallas Cowboys.

Asheville gets high ratings all the time in lists like these...and from living there 8 years and here 7...
...I'll take the 'burg every time over the 'ville.

The things you locals take for granted like the mountains and river are what this list is noting.

For what it's worth, I do think Lynchburg is a great place to live, and I think it's only going to get better. I'm just particularly peeved with the activity somewhat near my neighborhood in the last week.

Asheville has a nice downtown area with some quaint shops and eateries, not to mention a music scene decent enough to attract signed national acts and premium indie bands on a regular basis. Lynchburg is playing catch-up in the downtown business scene, but Asheville is miles ahead when it comes to concerts. For that reason, I'd have to favor Asheville.

Drop by on a fall Sunday and you'll notice a pretty high LU student ratio complete with RAs. It's perfectly acceptable. Although it probabbly has gone down since the opening of BWW. You can go there and not smell like lung cancer when you leave.

All it takes is one promoter with connections and a decent venue to catch up in the indie scene. The Orange Peel in Asheville seems to be the place to be right now, but little clubs like that come and go in smaller towns. It takes a significant population to make them stick for any length of time. (See Cat's Cradle, 9:30 Club, etc.)

Right now I currently go to c'ville for any type of quality night life.

Anyway LUConn, I was just kidding about Mudpuppy's...I know a lot of people who go there just for the games and food.

They sure seem to have done something right to land a residence for the Smashing Pumpkins and a tour stop for top indie acts like Spoon and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. I would love for Lynchburg to pull something off like that, but I don't see it happening anytime soon.

That reminds me of the days when Dan White (music coordinator at Liberty or something like that) would schedule some well known christian indie bands around Lynchburg because Liberty wouldn't allow them. Once he got the Liberty job he basically ignored the rest of Lynchburg and the scene went down the tubes.

I didn't realize he was LU staff now... that's unfortunate. I think he was involved in getting Copeland to Lynchburg a few years back, and he may have had a hand in the Vroom reunion show during Homecoming a year or two ago. Lynchburg has had a few decent surprises (musically) from time to time, but we haven't yet had a breakthrough moment.

oh back when I was in high school there used to be a show a week a lot of the time. i think he's been on the staff for at least two years now, maybe 3. hard to remember, i stopped paying attention to the music scene here because i got sick and tired of the people who populated the audience.

Honestly, I think a lot of the slowdown in the music scene here had to do with Vroom breaking up. We had a lot of shows around here when I was in college, and a lot of it had to do with Vroom putting Lynchburg on the map with the T&N bands. (T&N was pursuing them for a quite a while.) Once the T&N bands came through here, other bands were paying attention. Once Vroom broke up, the scene dried up. I'm not saying the were solely responsible for it, but they were good enough to attract other talent to the town. We haven't had that since then.
