On "Gilligan's Island," the long-running TV show, the seven folk aboard the USS Minnow sailed off for a three-hour tour when they were stranded on an uninhabited island for 98 episodes.
A young man from Arnold had a similar experience last month, except he was alone on an island full of African Puff Adder snakes. His parents and girlfriend received calls informing them he might be dead.
Matthew Sroka, 23, is one of Bonnie and John Sroka's four children. The other three - Josh, 27; Laura, 25; and Robin, 20 - all live nearby.
He is a couple credits shy of earning his bachelor's degree in Education and English at Liberty University, a Christian college in Lynchburg, Va., founded in 1971 by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell.
Instead of sailing through his final semester, claiming his diploma and getting his student-teaching requirement completed, the 2002 Annapolis Area Christian School graduate decided to spend six months in a small village in Tanzania, teaching children how to speak English.
