Lynchburg, Va - Enrollment at Liberty University is up. This fall, LU will welcome about 10-thousand five-hundred undergraduate and graduate students. That's about a thousand more than last year.

Liberty Christian Academy's numbers are also up. They have about a hundred more students than last year.

We had a huge wave the past couple of weeks. LU could potentially be to capacity this year.

I'm guessing you're no longer worried about filling empty campus east rooms at this point?

They ran a sale for new students--they could live on Campus East for the price of the Circle ($2700/per semester compared to $3650/per semester). That did it.

what!!! so they jack up returners prices but give new students a discount?
One of LU's biggest problems is they are so obsessed with growing that they forget about current students, and that's why so many people transfer.

AMEN!!!

Now the on campus thing no longer effects me, it hasn't for over a year, but now that I am married it effects me even less...but its so frustrating how every year it seems new incoming students get all these deals and the students that choose to stick around aren't given a whole lot....

Welcome to life in the real world. You'll never have more leverage with your employers than when you first arrive.

That's complete horse crap. Upperclassmen should be the ones getting deals on east campus, not freshman. They're the ones that have paid their dues. Yet again Liberty screws the easiest stuff up.

are you kidding me? I could have a kitchen, my own bathroom AND one roomate for the price of living with 2 roommates, no kitchen and share a bathroom and showers with 60+ guys!? thats rediculous.

Deals are part of recruitment. I would think people who follow sports so closely should understand that. Students and players go where the deal is the sweetest. If everyone gets some kind of a break as a freshman, then it's fair for everyone except for transfers who elect to live off campus.

When I was a sophomore the entire freshman class AND transfers got a free trip to Israel. Of course I was jealous, but it's just part of recruitment. And besides, the sweatshirt I got my freshman year was pretty sweet. Actually, it wasn't. But that's the lie I tell myself to keep from still being jealous about the Israel trip.

So it's ok to jack up the prices everywhere else and screw the returning students just to get some extra kids here? That's crap. There's a seniority in college, the returners should get the best deals on the best rooms.

They should get first pick, but I don't think they should get the best deals. Prices rise almost every year at almost every college I've ever heard of. It's hard enough to get freshman to come in the first place. If we have to cut them a break on housing to get them here, that's fine with me.

If we cut them a deal on the quads, ok. However, we're giving them the best dorms on campus when, given the opportunity, almost all of the upperclassmen would rather live over there if they could afford it.

You got me there. I would have cut the same price off of the older dorms for freshmen rather than the CE dorms. I hadn't considered where the freshman were getting the break for.

Are there any "senior dorms" left on campus?

israel? chosen for its religious history, i suppose? i didn't get anything when i chose to attend LC, but we aren't having any difficulties recruiting students either. normally around 3k-4k applicants and only have 500-600 freshman each year (it's been going up each year with this year having a record 600).

This is how every business in America works SJ. This is how the world works. LU did not screw this one up IMO. I think they are doing it correctly. It does stink if you are already a "paying costomer" but that is how it works. Think about it. New cell phone deals, satellite subscriber packages, apartment rentals, opening bank accounts, insurance purchases, nearly everything you do in life, they will offer you the world to get your business but make no effort to retain your business. That is one thing I try to do when I am in a project Management position and have influence on decisions companies make. I always try to get them to focus on RETENTION and GROWTH. It works sometimes, sometimes not.

In satellite tv and cell phones, I can agree, because you don't expect the customer to give anything back.

At a University, you want your students to enjoy their four years and be the best word of mouth recruits that they can. You want them to give back to the University. It's crap like this, the mentality of, "Let's just get em here and then we don't have to worry about it" that makes so many current students mad. Sure, that mentality works for cell phones, sporting events, etc, but for a place that these kids live 10 months out of the year it's a horrible mentality to have. That's why students think we're growing too fast. They do all kinds of things for incoming students, and absolutely nothing on getting kids here.

Of course, a legitimate question would be will the school jack up the cost of the dorms AFTER their first year...in the old bait and switch? THAT is a business principle, too...that I pray the school will not ascribe to.

That's exactly what they're going to do. The kids living in east now will have to pay more for it their sophomore-senior year.

Are you saying there will be a room and board increase or are you saying they won't be made aware that they're getting a one-time discount for their freshman year for enrolling?

Also, I still want to know if there are currently any "senior dorms" on campus. We had those when I was in school, and the rules regarding them were pretty nice.

Probably both. They raise room and board every year or two and we probably conveniently didn't tell them this was a one-time deal on moving onto East.

There are no senior dorms. Any student can live in any dorm as long as they can pay for it.

i think there should be a seniority system, i thought it was like that at all schools. at LC seniors (and special interest - meaning different teams or organizations like lacrosse, basketball) get first pick on whatever dorm room, house, or townhouse they want to live in, then followed by juniors and sophomores. the freshmen have to take whatever dorm room is given to them, they dont really have a say in the beginning, but they can always switch during the school year and they cant live in any of the houses or townhouses. but if there aren't enough current students forking out the money for hte more expensive living places, then i think the freshman should be given the opportunity to live there.

there is seniority in that the seniors sign up first for housing, and on down. but freshman can choose where they stay as long as it's open.
they raised prices this year for housing, but didn't really announce it. the only way i know is an ra told me. when the freshman that get the discount re-enroll, they will have the options current students have, which if they pay attention will not have a discount

Guys, they did not drop the prices for freshmen because they wanted to give them "a deal." All the other rooms on campus were full so they had no other option than to stay on east campus. Due to this, the school did not feel that it was fair to charge them the EC rate when the majority of the people they talked to wanted to stay on the circle but could not because it was full to capacity. I can understand how some of you who are paying the full price would be upset that a freshman with poor planning (waiting until the last second to register) would be "rewarded" with a discount, but by saying the school does not care or has forgotten about the returners is crazy. The leaders at our school not only try and make the best decisions for us everyday but I know that for a fact they are also praying for us. I would say that this is far more than most other schools. Anyways, on a lighter note, maybe next year all the returners should just wait until the end of summer to make their housing arrangements. :D
