They are fully accredited (or whatever the proper term would be) as a police department. Which means they are more than just simple unarmed security guards. But one of them pulled me over last night. Not on a school road which would be private property, but on Candlers Moutain Rd, a county/city road. Can they do that? I specifically didn't slow down because I knew he wasn't LPD. I almost said something along those lines to him but I didn't want to get him mad just in case they have this citation authority I didn't know about it. He gave me a "warning" but I think that's just because he doesn't have the power to write me a ticket. I mean they would have to have those big ticket sheets that the city/state cops use. It's not like he could slap me with one of those LU tickets. Anybody got a ruling on this?

if they are like most campus police depts, they have the authority on roads surrounding the school. kinda like a cooperative effort with LPD.

this is from the LUPD website:
NOTE: At the request of the Administration, Liberty University Police Department (L.U.P.D.) will enforce traffic and parking regulations on the property of Thomas Road Baptist Church, Old Time Gospel Hour or any other related ministry.

well yeah but they don't own that road. Just a lot of land around it. TRBC also owns some property that touches mine but would they take me to the LUPD holding tank for running around naked on my street?

They provide mutual aid to and recieve the same from the city, I do know that.

this is a common occurance among depts whose jurisdictions border others, esp since LU falls within city limits- an agreement w/ city PD would allow them jurisdiction around campus as well.

my guess is yes, he would have the necessary authority to cite you- these guys wouldn't be initiating traffic stops without the authority to take corresponding action, though I wouldn't have been surprised to see a city cop pull up behind him as well.

From what i understand they have full juristiction(GMTM?) over the city of lynchburg. If you are n LU student off campus breaking the law they can ticket/arrest/pull you over whenever they see fit. scary isn't it.

If thats true ( and someone needs to find out ) that could very well be the biggest joke this town has ever seen.

but I'm not a student. Are they gonna give me an LU ticket (also known as "a souvenir" or "litter" to nonstudents) or do they have a pad of Lynchburg citations?

i see. I have no idea I know that they give you souviner parking tickets if you are a visitor. but i guess they probably can pull you over and ticket you with a lynchburg citation. like the almighty medic said it probably wouldn't be suprising if a LPD cop pulled up to actually write the citation.

Yes, LUPD does have jurisdiction in the City of Lynchburg as well as Campbell, Bedford and Amherst counties. The Champion did a story on this a while back. Normally if its a student speeding you'll either get a warning or an LU ticket unless its 15 mph over the speed limit, which is when they issue reckless driving thats handled by the city courts.

Correctomundo. We have jurisdiction and full cooperation with all four of those PD's.

but what exactly does that mean? I'm sure they could arrest someone if need be, but I don't think they have the equipment to "run" my plates through the traffic database in their car, and I really don't think they can write a speeding ticket (other than the LU ones) either. I'm not dissing them or anything but I would be very surprised to find that they have a book of tickets for 4 different counties/city. This was up on the mountain, not down by TRBC which would seem a little more normal. Am I gonna see them going after the teens on Wards road next?

I would love to see in court an LUPD guy with no radar prove i was going 15mph over the speed limit...cops have to have the speedometer recallibrated every so often as the state mandates this.....some of those LUPD wagons haven't had it done in YEARS i gaurantee it.....that would be quite an interesting fight in court.

I think they've got a radar gun. He said he had me clocked on it. I assume he wasn't lying. But yeah, a few of those things are jalopies. They've got an unmarked one now.

My roommate in college was LUPD. At one point, they had their powers of arrest taken away, per the request of a high-level manager. They saw how bad that was for them. I'm pretty sure they have them back now.

I went to court one day for a speeding ticket given to me by Lynchburg Police. The case after mine involved a ticket from LUPD. The LUPD officer was there in court with his notebooks & everything.

They have access to LPD things & cooperation from LPD to do more than you think they can.

I guess thats it then. I suppose I'll have to be careful up on the mountain now. That's annoying.

They may not have it in the car, but they have it at HQ, so it's only a call away. They have full access to the VA State Police network. True story.

a lot of students think of them like this too. i've seen everything from people ball them up and chunk them to people tacking them on the wall like trophies

I did not enjoy having that "litter" charged to my student account. I'm glad some people are proud of them, but as someone who paid their own way through school, I did not care for them at all.

I consider my parking ticket from UVA as more of a souvenier than the three yellow slips of paper LUPD gave me during my 4-year career (two of which got appealed :P )

i had 11 tickets tacked on my wall last year because i was able to talk my way out of every single one of them at the end of the semester and didnt have to pay for any of them, as well as not having my car registered all first semester

My biggest problem with the tickets is they demand you turn in an appeal within 7 days but it takes them 10 months to get them back.
