According to WSET news, the vote was 5-1.

But Councilman Mike Gillette, the lone dissenter, said after the vote that the renaming is inappropriate.

“I recognize that Jerry Falwell did a number of positive things for this area,” Gillette said. “But what brought him notoriety was not his positive influence.”

Rather, he said, it was the “hateful and hurtful” things he said. It isn’t the role of government to honor the man, he said, when so many other opportunities at his university, church and the community in general are available.
If you live in Mike Gillette's district, don't let him forget that he said this when the appropriate time comes.

While it may be the "hateful and hurtful" things he said that people remember nationally, that still doesn't change the fact that he did a lot of great things for Lynchburg. If it wasn't for him, Lynchburg would not be half of what it is today.

Gillette is just a jerk, plain and simple. This was nothing but a symbolic vote and he took the opportunity to raise his douchebaggery to new levels. If a vote ever comes before city council that has to do with LU, TRBC, etc. you can be sure that Gillette will always vote against us. He does it every single time, no matter what it's about. Even so, I wouldn't have expected him to be this big of a jerk.

What goes around comes around, though. He'll get it back at some point.

Remember this from last year? ["Gillette said “faith” shouldn’t be included in the statement because it would be interpreted as “code” for Falwell’s Thomas Road Baptist Church."] http://george.loper.org/~george/archive ... p/941.html

The man is full of hate and takes every chance to posture for his liberal Rivermont buddies in trying to buck all things Jerry. I bet he's still upset by the Gerdes appointment to the school board in his absence too.

I'd love to see him try to win an election in an area larger than Rivermont.

Gillette is on the radio talking about this right now. What a tool. "Jerry Falwell did a lot of good things but he was not inclusive, blah blah blah, I don't think that represents Lynchburg, blah blah" Well the 6-1 vote is probably a pretty accurate representation.

It's funny their phones were flooded with calls and they had to stop taking them. Only 1 dude agreed with him. Sounds like he was elected as a representative of the city.

I have to stop reading anything about Gillette. It makes my mind drop down to a high-school level, behaviorally speaking.

RICHMOND - The House of Delegates voted 90-3 Monday to name a section of U.S. 460 in Lynchburg the Jerry Falwell Parkway, which means only the signature of Gov. Timothy M. Kaine is necessary to complete the naming.

The section of U.S. 460 between the Monacan Bridge in Lynchburg and Wards Road in Campbell County will carry the name of Falwell, who died May 15 at the age of 73.
