This is pretty cool. Not that we'll be on par with them any time soon, but VTech is going to be getting some competition from some school over in Lynchburg.

An agreement this week between Liberty University and The Center for Advanced Engineering and Research at Virginia’s Region 2000 Partnership is breathing new life into a defunct Ericsson testing lab, while simultaneously creating opportunities for local industry and for the university’s new engineering program.

The lab, now owned by the university, could be active again late this summer, thanks to hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants from Tyco and the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission, CAER Executive Director Bob Bailey said.

Technicians will use the lab to test energy emissions from new electronics to make sure they don’t inappropriately interfere with other electronic equipment, Bailey said. Once the lab is up and running, Bailey said, the goal is to gain approval from the Federal Communications Commission by September to start certifying that these new electronics meet federal standards.

I must say, where LU is now and where it was 4 years ago when I started is simply astounding. We are definitely a school on the rise, and I am proud to have graduated from here.

This is really good to see. I don't know much about engineering but that testing center is apparently a big deal. There's only a few like it in the world.
A friend of mine used to work in R&D at the Ericsson plant and transferred to Colorado after the plant closed. Last fall, he came back to visit family for the first time in several years and was a little impressed w/ what LU/TRBC/LCA had done with the place but his biggest question was what were we doing with the testing center? He said it would be a real shame for it to be either dismantled or just sitting there unused.

I'm very excited about our engineering program.

What building will the college of Engineering be housed? Or have they built a new building for the college already?
