Just down river in Richmond, 2 hours east of Lynchburg, is the Queen of England. She's here to help celebrate the 400 year anniversary of the Jamestown settlement (1607-2007).

What random facts do you all know about Jamestown in 1607?

I know in 1620, the Pilgrims were trying to get to VA...and had to stop at Plymouth...b/c they ran out of BEER on the Mayflower.

Thanks to Fumble, and my original post, we now have 2 dates & 2 events--1607 (Jamestown) & 1620 (Plymouth).

Now, who can tell me what happened in 1619 (in Virginia)?

The Reverend Richard Buck officiated the ceremony of the sacrament of marriage of Pocahontas and John Rolfe .

Correct again, Fumble!

Okay, Henry, if you want a harder one, tell me a about either 1565 or 1693.

August 4 1693 - Dom Perignon invents champagne

August 28, 1565 - Oldest city in the U.S., St. Augustine Fla, established (I have eaten at the Sonny's there numerous times, but that is another thread)

It's a little known fact that several different flags have flown over St. Augustine....
...name them! And yes...this IS a 5th grade question from Florida Social Studies...at least it was in 1972...

Henry, I'm looking for a more "academic" (and less alcoholic) response for 1693.

He's probably looking for some mundane factoid like Bill and Mary hooking up.

Fumble, good thinking--the 2nd oldest college in America is founded in Williamsburg in 1693: The College of William & Mary.

Everybody knows Harvard was first, but what was the year? And, what was our country's 3rd college, and when was it founded?

What is...
Harvard...1636, and
St Johns College in Annapolis...1696?
(I only hope this information comes in handy come quiz bowl time)

Yes to Harvard in 1636, but the 3rd college was associated with the congregationalist church, not Catholic.

Maryland does have the 10th oldest college in America, but it's not at College Park and not St. Johns.

Bryson is not going to like the answer to this one, but what is the oldest state college in America?

You're trying to get me to say YALE...
...but I beg to differ:

For the state college, I just cannot bring myself to say it...

who was the most famous president for the college of New Jersey??

The current one...
...or the original one, now known as Princeton?

You could debate the great evangelist Jonathon Edwards...
...or Woodrow Wilson...who was born in the great Commonwealth of VA.

I was going with John Witherspoon....my bad, should have clarified

Fumble, my UVa history of education textbooks are in my office at school, but I don't remember anything about St. John's College in Maryland, so I'll have to get back with you on that one.

Hint: the Maryland college that I was referring to earlier was our first non-colonial college (and it's not Hopkins).

About Dickens' question & Fumble's response, Jonathan Edwards was president of Princeton for only a few months before he died. What killed him?
