I can't find a picture of this anywhere, but I saw in today's paper, LC has but up a huge bronze statue of a hornet near their new track complex. It looks pretty sweet. I'm very jealous. The story said that the founder of Belk, donated the money for it, despite having absolutely no ties to the school. He's known for helping small colleges with ther track & field programs. Anyway, if any of you internet detectives can find a picture of it, post it here.

All we need is one of Sparky in mid-cartwheel!

Here is the skinny...
The "Fighting Hornet" statue will be unveiled and dedicated at 6:30 p.m. before the men's lacrosse team takes the field against Hampden-Sydney College. Concluding the ceremony there will be a dedication to honor the brand new track and field during halftime at the men's lacrosse game.

If LU were to do somehing like this, what do you think the appropriate mascot would be to use? Maybe Sparky mid cartwheel is the best option???

Does the hornet have a name?

no goobers it would be a statue of a real eagle. Like UMD has a statue of a turtle, not testudo.

Well, right now I'm working on a new Fighting Eagle. We're just not sure if or when we will be able to use it.

is it similar to the one rolling up his sleeve? That one is sweet. How else could you convey that he's fighting? I guess a "put up your dooks" ND/Miami style.

Well, we couldn't continue to use the old one because that is clip art.

The one I'm doing is more of a "strutting eagle" (think UNC's strutting mascot).

Along this line:

I definitely think we should have something to honor "Rock" Royer, LU's first football coach at The Bill. We have to start and perpetuate some traditions, it is long overdue.

It's funny, I just imagined if it had been LU that got something like this and the N&A publishing an article on it. Even with a donor giving the money, I could see the local yokel comments now. There would be at least one rambling about how Jerry was just installing it to bring glory to himself. There'd be another comment about LU could spend the money on more important things like education or helping the poor. Then there'd be two or three comments about how ugly it was or how the copper could have been used for electrical cabling from solar panels or something.

If Doc went out & gave everyone in Lynchburg a twenty-dollar bill, some would complain because it wasn't a new $20.

Whenever they get the stadium built and have a grand entrance a la that NC State pic that smooth posted, they could always put a raised large cauldron on a brick base out in front. They could have it lit for games and/or have a faux flame for everyday.

it seems like everyone at LC, including me, find the Hornet to be absolutely hideous.
