LU Hip Hop Roll Call

TBGBGGVSLKJSF got me thinking about LU Hip Hop... I got to LU in 96 and was actually in a rap group (long time ago) and I got to know a bunch of the guys who paved the way for what's going on today... In fact in the BTG promo video at myspace.com/humbletip there is a video that pays homage to the formation of the step team in 98. My whole time at LU experienced a sort of an uprising of hip hop... Some of you might remember:

Big Slam
Marc Andre
Don P and CZ
4 Feet Deep
Soldiers for Christ
Sojourners
Spot Boom

On a recent note I came across this video on "Humble Tip's" myspace (link above). This is incredible... I don't know when it was done but boy how things have changed... I love it.

Also, a few of the guys mentioned above are doing music professionally. CZ- Czrhymes.com and http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu ... d=10851124

Mac from Sojourners is on the Cross Movement label and just released a CD in the last few weeks:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu ... d=12309142
and http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?f ... d=11828725

Apparently most of "Big Slam" lives in my part of the state (Hampton Roads) but I don't know them personally and to my knowledge they stopped making music when I was still at LU.

Does anyone else know of some Hip Hop they wish to add. This could become a pretty cool thread since it's a unique aspect of campus life at LU.

I know he isn't hip hop per se but there is a guy Phil Tuminaro aka Double Edge who is quite adept with the spoken word. He cut a number called "The Story" that has regularly been a part of the 90.9 rotation since it debuted 2-3 years ago.

Id have to talk to my buddy DJ PDOGG because he would know a few other folks round LU that are doin big things hip hop style

Dare I bring up the original incarnation of dcTalk back in the Mid '80s before they shifted genres in the '90s?

Big Slam!! (I'm actually friends with some of these guys! and Joy)

Marc Andre

Old song site: http://www.myspace.com/myalmamater

His new bands site: http://www.myspace.com/marcandreband

I remember when Reality Check put out their first homemade Hip Hop album at Liberty (I was a Freshman). They seemed to be heading down the DC Talk path when they abruptly broke up. I thought they won a Dove Award for New Artist of the Year, but didn't make it to a second album.

DcTalk sucked as a rap group, yes...but I owned their cd's/tapes and loved them at the time...to this day I can still listen to their Jesus Freak/Supernatural cd's without feeling like I am listening to crap

DC Talk opened a lot of doors for Christian artists of several genre's to be accepted by the church...so like them or not...you have to give them credit for that....

Shame on you postman :nono As for Humble Tip, Tally he is very good... Last year there was talk about doing concerts after football games, I don't know if it will be brought up again this year. It was basically trying to get students there that wouldn't normally come to a football game but would come to a concert...

Yup, that was a great idea from some incredibly smart kid.

As for DC Talk, I grew up with em. I don't like them nearly as much now as I used to, but I was a huge DC Talk fan growing up.

the concert thing is a very good idea....I was at the concert last night and it got so loud in the Vines Center at one point, and I turned to tell Rachel (fiance)...if it got this loud for basketball games this would be a very hard place to play......she didn't hear me....so i had to wait til it got quieter...

The point of concerts after games is two fold: first, it gets people out to the games that normally wouldn't go. Once you get someone to a game, most of the battle is won. Second, it keeps the people there until the game is over, regardless of score.

They're also talking about doing live music before the games this year, which was a great suggestion by a very smart person last year as well.

Here's where "Reality Check" went...

Rod Shuler has a trip-hop project called "Fleau" based out of Nashville: http://www.myspace.com/fleaumusic

Nathan Barlowe started a band with his brother called Luna Halo. Last year Rick Rubin signed them to his American Recordings label and produced their first album. (Rick Rubin was the co-founder of Def Jam Records and is the man behind LL Cool J, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Slayer, Tom Petty, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash's later work, etc. etc. etc.) The album isn't out yet (I don't think) but the first single (Kings & Queens) was picked for the theme song for the 2007 NHL playoffs. I think the show King of Queens is also using the song during their final few episodes.

I got to hear the demo versions of that album pre-Rick Rubin, and then an advance copy after the recording was done. That man can really turn a band's sound around. The album is pretty good, so if you're interested, check it out: http://www.myspace.com/lunahalo

I could've sworn Luna Halo came out with something a few years ago....I could be mistaking them for somebody else though

They may have put out an independent album or two. That wouldn't be surprising. They've been together for a little while. This will be their first release for a major label, as American Recordings is part of the Warner Music company.
